I followed your suggestion of using the D2D downloader with IE Explorer and voila it friggin' worked!
Might have been worthwhile for D2D to mention this sort of thing. Not everyone uses IE Explorer, after all, and not everyone likes using d/l managers!

Still don't understand why it did work under WinXP without this "trick", though. Ah well, I'm good now.
