I think Sandylowlead's is a Corben Babyace, an early "homebuilt" from the 1920's. You can still get plans and kits for 'em today, though it's very rare to see one with a radial engine nowadays. The one in the photo must be pretty old, and it still drips oil! Where do you work Sandy? Place looks pretty cool in the photo
Nobody wants to guess at mine? Hint: It's a homebuilt from the '70's. Last edited by flynlion; 11-30-2009 at 11:33 PM. |

Danny NL's is the Heinkel fighter, He-99, which was in competition with the Bf-109 for the role as principle Luftwaffe fighter, during the 1930's.

Are you sure Panzer? The He-112 was a competitor with the Bf-109, and it was a tail-wheel plane. This one seems kinda odd with a nose gear up front sharing space with a big water-cooled engine, kinda wonder how it all fit. Maybe the nose wheel tucked up into the gap left by the inverted V? I can't find anything on the He-99 except that a few flew in Spain with the Condor Legion, no pictures. Now I'm curious to learn more about it.... Last edited by flynlion; 12-02-2009 at 09:23 AM. |

Is it a lightning prototype? P1.A or something? Maybe a Short SB.5?

Well that certainly narrows it down LoL. To me it looks kinda like a Republic F-84 Thunderstreak, except the tail is wrong. What is it Vulcan?

Russia had the LaGG-1 and LaGG-3, Britain had the Miles M-20 amd Finland had the "Reckless" (A wooden copy of the Buffalo powered by an I-16 engine). I find the "also flew" fighters and bombers more interesting than the more familiar fare. The accounts of the many dogfights between HS-123 bi-plane fighters and Soviet I-15 bi-planes is one forgotten part of the 1941 invasion of Russia. The Chinese ace, "Fatty" Chung, scored all his kills with the Vultee P-66 Vanguard, despite also flying the fast but clumsy P-43 Lancer, which the P-47 Thunderbolt is a bigger version of. Here it is from a different angle, it looks much more "experimental" from the side. Last edited by flynlion; 12-03-2009 at 07:25 PM. |
