that ~1.2Ghz on top of what I have now wouldn't make any difference in any case
Nope

EDIT: Just watch the black death, my lowest FPS according to fraps was 39fps during the twist and turn over the small city, while in exterior view moving mouse look.

your saying your minium fps while running the black death track is 39fps? whats your average if i may ask? also what do you mean by "moving mouse look", arent you just running the track as it is, and letting fraps record your fps?

anyway thats dam good. is that with maxxed settings also?

Yeah, I wouldn't take a fraps reading for min FPS - everyone else is going on the reading from the console command "fps START SHOW", though you have to remember to do "fps STOP SHOW" then "fps START SHOW" again on each flight/track play. It's cumbersome, but will be a better indicator of stutters/low fps than fraps.

Plus, patrat is asking about mouselook because when running tracks for fps comparison with other people, it's best to leave the camera alone to do it's own thing so that comparisons are fair - let the track itself do the head movements..

Average: 50
Max: 143
Min: 14

Ran it three times, average and max were give or take 5fps, but min was 14 each time, and only for a couple of seconds where a british plane is taking off and a bomb explodes taking up the entire view area. The following carpet comb sequence plays around 33fps and once the dust settles its back to the average and higher.

Thanks btw for the console commands! I don't like fraps very much...

EDIT: And the mouse look, I had edit views enabled and was using F10 to mouse look everywhere

What screen resolution do you have?

I get pretty much identical results to Srinidhalaya in the Black Death track, depending on SSAO and Vsync (SSAO doen't make much difference, VSync locks the max fps down to 60.

I'm considering the same here - though I'll either upgrade the motheboard/cpu to a sandy Bridge, or "invest" in a watercooling setup to push the 920 I have to 4.4-4.5GHz (already on 4GHz on air).

Only today I decided to take a trip into London and pick up a 3Gb GTX 580, to swap out the standard GTX 580 I had and sell off the standard on on ebay - I thought there'd be a bit more of a pronounced effect on the stuttering over London (which isn't awful by any standard) but it's made little to no difference - VRAM usage on the old 580 was getting right up to 1500Mb, so I figured the extra VRAM would make a difference. VRAM usage with the 3Gb card has been up to 1.7Gb, but I've not had much chance to do any long flights yet to see if it'll use the full 3Gb.

Optimisations are the best hope for framerates and/or stuttering issues methinks, until we get some beefier CPUs in a year or two. Top of the range, right now, is a 4.6+GHz Sandy Bridge with a GTX 580, I think.

e: I should add - I have a ram drive setup on this PC for CloD as well - 24Gb RAM total, with various partitions for windows files/CloD/fancy cache. A few moments setup on startup (which happens relatively infrequently) and the difference in loading times and general operation is pretty amazing.
for the stuttering over london try lowering your land shading to medium and turning shadows off.

i did this and its now pretty smooth flying low over london.
