A little idea for the tank tracks
I think the tank track broke down ONE SIDE and the tank should be able to
move 360 degree at the same place. Because this can make the game more realistic, just like WW2 At other point, it may improve the self-propelled gun's survival chance. |

Was that possible? I'd think that if they did that it would mess up the broken tracks even more.

why not? if you want the tank completly stop, you can just shoot both tracks down.

I don't think that actually works in real life. You're not pivoting on a small axis so it's really not that simple. One track goes, the whole tank goes.

actually you coudnt because you need the other track to counter steer. for example if the left track broke and you wanted to turn right your right track would turn correctly but you wouldnt have grip on your left one because theres no tension. you would simply roll off your left track.
but if you were on a street street with pavement you probably could even drive straight a few meters because you can still roll on your support wheels but you couldnt really turn. |

depends on what tank you where driving.
Most allied tanks didn't had neutral steering. (IICR some do had it, like the churchill tanks and fur sure the CharB had it). so most of them braked on one track to steer left/right. the later german series, Tiger and panther series, all had neutral steering. This men very fast turning in place. of course, you still could use the 'braking' technique'. Technically, with one track brocken, you can still turn the tank. |

you couldnt turn with one track broken because to either break or turn you need tension and woithout tension you dont have tourque on the one track. theres one wheel on eatch track that delivers the torque from the engine to the track it looks like cogwheel. but if on one side the track is broken and the whole track doesnt have tension, the wheel does turn but can not turn the track - because its broken

But if the the tank's driver hits the break at other side and turn, will that work?

no you cant. to break you need to block your torque wheel (either the left, the right one or both). all other wheels are just here to roll on but they dont do anything. usually the torque wheel is always a bit elevated as you can see here: http://i40.tinypic.com/i22fqc.jpg
this torque wheel is needed to BREAK and to ACCELERATE. i dont know how the old tanks worked but i know how the good old m113 works (i drove one in the military -> http://i40.tinypic.com/35ivkzr.jpg). there are disc brakes on each of the torque wheels. now to turn your tank lets say to the right you need to pull on your right radius lever (i dont know the word in english sorry) which activates the disc brakes on your right torque wheel and slows it down --> the right track slows down -> your making a right curve. you can also turn your tank while its not moving. the m113 also cant move both tracks in the oposite direction. you have to pull another lever, which completely activates the disc brake and blocks one torque wheel (left or right ) now with the on track locked hit the gas and your tank will perform a turn on the spot. you cant perform this with one track broken because you dont have tension on your track. so no, you cant break without the track. i also made a nice little illustration : http://i39.tinypic.com/4rxhkp.jpg Last edited by corleone11; 04-15-2009 at 12:00 AM. |

corleone11 is right guys, once one of the tracks are gone, youre dead in the water. Not much you can do until it is repaired. Even with modern tanks today, they have that same problem. Seen here as well when a M88 threw a track outside of Fallujah, Iraq.
