Units available to the Player...?

Love the game so far, but I have one big question and found no help ...
The type of units that are available to the player are determined how ? Does the Mage have access to the same units as a Warrior or Paladin...When do the Horsemen become available and how ?
Would help if there was some data on this area..

It seems to be mostly random, but if you solve quests for someone, their castle or building will often be restocked with units, plus more advanced units will be added.

As for horsemen, they will become available in the main castle as you play the main story quest and get promoted. I can't remember exactly when in the game this happens.

Horsemen get added to the main castle after you complete the dwarf alliance quest. You can also get horsemen from the blue tent in Greenwort.
