Default New units and items: Good? Bad?

Just wondering if anyone has done a guide for WoTN yet.

Currently I am only on the first 4 islands, here are some units that I like so far:

Jarl: Pretty much the none heal, none rez version of paladin. The "Cleave" and "Cry" ability are pretty weak though. Relatively low init, but works good as tank. Decent HP per unit.
Soothsayer: Decent CC and at least has some kind of rez for Vikings' units. The mesmorize ability is good for anything other than undead. Weak attack though. Decent HP per unit.
Axe-thrower; Short range shooter but decent in hand-to-hand. Relatively decent HP per unit. Good init
Skald; Good for support but relatively weak in combat. Low HP per unit.
Slinger: Nothing special
Berserker: Double counter is good but nothing else really shines.
Vikings: Good strike units, plan to loss a lot of them in the fights though.

I just started to see a few Jotun pop up, might try them soon. Feedback plz

Warrior Maidens are a must have and I get them as soon as I find them. They've got this long distance attack that can pretty much wipe out an entire enemy stack if you have enough of them. They also have a healing ability that is pretty strong. Their attack is decent as well.

Agreed on the Slingers. I usually replace them as soon as I can. Haven't tried the Jotun yet but I might with my next play through.

When I have an all Viking army, they are:

Beserkers - I like because of the run ability and the double hit. They can be major tanks in higher numbers.

Jarls - mainly for the additional turn ability, which I usually give to the Berserkers. The cry ability is hilarious. Follow that with cleave and it's one more enemy ground into dust.

Soothsayer - the charming of an enemy stack is brilliant and better than hypnosis because everyone can attack them. With the attack rune, their base attack can make a good dent in an enemy stack.

Warrior Maidens - for all the reasons stated above.

Skalds - for both the blessing and the curses. Yeah, they're kind of weak in the attack unless they also apply the pain mirror ability. If the enemy unit is also cursed, that usually means the end of them.

I keep Vikings and Axe-throwers in reserve and switch them out when one of the other stacks is weakened from a hard battle and I'm nowhere near where I can get more.

Hope that helps.

Cleave is pretty nice. It means he can hit 5 enemies over every 3 turns and still take only 3 retaliations. That's +66% free damage. Cry I agree is kind of meh, but situationally a nice boost on turn 2. Daring can be great with +crit equipment.

Berserker (ability) is cruise control for killing everything. Berserkers (unit) can reach ~90% crit rate as soon as you start the game. Attack will also be insanely high for a T2/3 unit, closer if not greater than a T4/5. Keep in mind that the doubling of crit and attack happens AFTER morale and other boosts, so your +20 attack +10% crit hero is now +40 attack +20% crit for them. Probably some of the highest effective damage per leadership units in the game.

High initiative, huge speed, Messenger of the Gods (-10% attack and defense to nearby enemies), Beautiful (30% miss chance to males), 20% resistance to physical, and flat-out high HP/leadership is great as well. Great as tanks, skirmishers to quickly get to enemy archers, you name it.
