Default How to setup your Defiants

ok, i've worked out how to setup the defiants in FMB so they act half decent. First, set your pilots AI to "Rookie". This will mean he'll fly along your set path without AI deviation. This is actually what you want because your gunner needs a stable gun platform. Then Set your gunner to what you like, i tried "Ace" and was amazed to see a phalanx of Defiants (vic formation) rip through 12 Ace 109s like butter, leaving 2 to escape!

I had a squadron of deffys flying circles over a convoy, which in practice was a defensive circle for the defiants. As they were flying fairly low, it gave the 109s no chance.

WHEW! finally found a work-around for deffys! ..back to campaign building!

I like the ambition. But this is in no way historical. Defiant gunners with laser sights?

Defiants SHOULD get shot down like towed targets. They were in reality, once LW learned they should not attack from high six.

yeah, would be good if CLOD AI Ace understood to attack a target at it's weak point - for a deffy 6 low, like most british bombers. Hopefully the SDK / readme will teach us how to fix AI ?

Defiant didn't have lazer sights but what they had worked ok for skilled gunners, and that's the crux of the matter - having the time to train gunners and pilots to work in unison. 264 Sqn had some tme to create and perfect tactics to great success, 141 Sqn had none. Even the flight leader of 141 Sqn called the defiant a death trap, no wonder it turned into turkey shoot.

The Defiant was designed in the mid-1930's when it was anticipated that the Germans would send unescorted bombers all the way from Germany. It was designed as a bomber destroyer and was expected to fly in front or under the bomber stream and attack.

The German invasion of France changed all this. Me 109s could now fly from France and escort the bombers.

Yes, sorry, thats fair.

Nothing I have seen have helped fix AI to that level. Even Heinkills guide to skill settings, I still get enemy aircraft half rolling like drunks to evade. This will not be fixed. There have been no news in any beta patch that this is being worked on, so no way will it get in final patch suddenly now
