Default Graphics in 2011: Recommendation to Devs

Hi all,

I've been playing IL2 since it first came out many years ago and it is still my favorite sim today.

After a long period where I was busy with life, I decided to recently come back. My current install uses UP3.0 with the latest patch.

In 2011 the graphics still look incredible but there is one recommendation I would like to make to our fantastic team working on the patches.

Many times in MP, I've been waiting in the gunnery positions thinking - if only those gun textures were high resolution this would be perfect.

I would like to recommend to the dev team that they focus on the most commonly used planes in MP and update all the internal textures to high res goodness.

I hope this is the right place, if there are any texture mods that would do the above then please let me know.

Best regards

PS. Cockpit shadows too

To put it bluntly:

You can't put an aircraft engine into a car and expect it to run perfectly. It may work but it'll swallow more fuel than you can ever pay in your lifetime and the driving comfort will be abysmal.

Il-2 1946 is based on an engine that is more than ten years old already. That is prehistoric history in game development terms and most of nowadays technology wasn't even thought of back then. Updating it is not an option since the engine has already been pushed beyond what it could run without jumping through the hoops so any kind of "hi-res" or "2011 gfx" is not going to happen. That, essentially, is what Cliffs of Dover is supposed to be. Once it works fully, that is.

Thor has pretty much said it. Il-2 could have a few additional features added such as bloom, high dynamic range and self-shadowing (which are all possible with its version of OpenGL and DirectX) but the issue would be finding someone who is familiar with these older versions of the GPIs and is willing to work on them. It is unlikely you will as I doubt there would be any graphics programmer who wants to waste their time on an old game.

There is a Bloom effect mod that exists for DirectX8/9 games that works with stock Il-2 BUT you have to sacrifice perfect landscape for it to work.

Imagine:

- You have an older rig.
- You look to buy Il-2 '46
- You check the minimal specs on the package - they hardly match but at least they match!
- You patch your game after install (you are supposed to do so).
- What would you think, if the minmal specs would have secretly raised with the patching and your game is now running like a turtle?

We are supposed to stick more or less (rather more) to what is written on the box, as long as it still gets sold.
