A whole generation of pilots learned to treasure the Spitfire for its delightful response to aerobatic manoeuvres and its handiness as a dogfighter. Iit is odd that they had continued to esteem these qualities over those of other fighters in spite of the fact that they were of only secondary importance tactically. Thus it is doubly ironic that the Spitfire’s reputation would habitually be established by reference to archaic, non-tactical criteria.

(c) years of Tree's unrelenting negativity scared away so many potential buyers that the developer couldn't afford to hire a community manager.

Seriously I'm sure initial sales were good when they discussed hiring a community manager, but probably tailed off considerably when the state of the game became known. Maybe after a few patches a positive buzz might attract more sales. The original IL-2 also started slow because most people never heard of the aircraft or the sim.
