![]() ![]() this is first experiment vertical take of from carrier HMS EAGLE. the airplane is Westland Wyvern S4 ![]() ![]() BUT this airplane is out from hystory of ww2 first fly is in the 1953 from hms illustrious. Wyvern into combat from HMS Eagle, flying 79 sorties during Operation Musketeer; the armed response to the Suez Crisis. |

There never have been any vertical takeoff with this plane. They just got catapulted normally (in which the Wyvern had problems with engines cutoff due to the high rate acceleration - many just fell into the water then).

Yes, catapults work horizontally.
![]() The illustration, that you posted above, shows two Wyverns in a pass over the carrier (you can see their wingtip trails coming from behind the carrier) and then pulling up. You also can see Vampires get catapulted from the carriers deck. Its a nice picture anyway and the Wyvern is a cool plane, despite the problems it had back then.
