How to play or create coop missions?

It seems impossible to fly anything else than dogfight in IL2Cod. Only the host seems to be able to select aircraft in cooperative missions to fly with while the clients can't select any aircraft. This happens in stock missions as well as user created missions. Is it a serious bug or am I doing something wrong?
