Hello, could someone explain how to activate the sphere of cold artifact. Please forgive my ignorance. Loving this game, but getting killed in Derenhalle.

You don't need to activate it, it works when equipped. Unit that has it doesn't pay the penalty for crossing the river.

Thanks for your reply. Wow, I really feel stupid now. I actually thought I could freeze the river and send my troops across.
