Default 2GB VRAM makes no difference to stuttering

I just upgraded from an ATI 5850 1GB to a 6950 2GB (flashed to 6970 bios) and while I got a modest increase in FPS (10-20%) the stuttering is exactly the same. Win 7 64bit, E8500@4Ghz, 1920x1080 medium settings.

My CPU sits at about 30% utilization.

30% is low, is your ati card fully activated when the game start ? some stay on idle frequency

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the 69xx series is a dual GPU on one slot card. If that's the case not only are you running crossfire, which we know doesn't work, but the 2gb VRAM is actually the same as 1gb, it's just 1gb for each GPU. That can be an advantage depending on how you use the Crossfire, if the second GPU/VRAM combo is doing all the AA and AF work, then that VRAM will come in handy, if both GPUs are working on rendering the scene then it's effectively 1gb VRAM.

the 5890 is dual-GPU 2Gig
the 6970 is single GPU 2Gig
the 6990 is dual with 4gig ( i wouldn't recommended it's a wattage hog )

Good to know Plucka !

The 30% overall CPU sounds good to me, it is 30% of the total 4 cores your Win7 sees (2 real + 2Ht) I presume, which should be about right I think.

Is it possible to run GPU-Z and tell us what the memory usage of your GPU is when running the game?
(see my picture at the very right (sorry, big screen)).
