Installing Devices

I just got Star Wolves 3 yesterday, can someone please explain why I cannot install devices even though I am docked? I have open slots with the right color\stripes etc, yet it tells me "You cannot install into the mothership in the outer space". What the heck does that mean? How am I supposed to do this?
