hey there, been around this forum for at least the last 2 years, i finally found a reason to throw out my first post.
as for Bombing in il2, i find it impossible to hit anything with the bombsight while flying. then a idea struck my head. what about adding a "indicated impact" circle on the ground visible at all heights? add a new function that uses the A.I bombardier skill to indicate where the payload will hit the ground with your current heading/altitude and speed kinda like BATTLESTATIONS MIDWAY style when using the bombs now i know it wont be visible from inside the cockpit, but then again, i bet the guys flying 100% realism have no problem bombing via the sight, and this would certanly help out us who love the external view (F2) |

As a separate and configurable option I see no problem with that. Sounds like a good idea to learn how to practice level bombing in the early stages.
In the meantime I suggest you go on YouTube and do a search for IL-2 level bombing guide or tutorial. There's a few really good ones that should help you learn the bombsights. I would start with the He-111 or the Ju-88 as those bombsights are predictable. There were some bugs (not sure if there still are) with the B-25J bombsight and the A-20C bombsight. You'll also want to print out a IAS > TAS conversion guide to help you calculate the speed differences so that you plug in the right values into the bombsight (IAS is the speed that your instruments indicate you're flying at and TAS is the actual speed you're covering on the ground). And if level bombing doesn't work for you right away then there is always the other alternatives: 1) Dive bombing. There are quite a few good dive bombers in the game which makes putting bombs on target much easier. In particular, the Stuvi bombsight in the Ju88A-4, Ju87D-5 and the Ar234 can be setup so that all you have to do is fly the plane right and you can put bombs wherever the piper is. 2) Skip bombing. I like doing this a lot. Flying at very low altitudes with attack bombers or fighter-bombers and droping the bombs so they skip into the target. Works best on ships but you can do it against tanks and other targets if need be. Need to practice timing and setup approrpriate bomb delays. 3) Rocket attacks. Aircraft with rockets mean you can lay down some very heavy firepower on a target without having to figure out what is going on with the bombs dropping out of the aircraft. Rockets are more direct although not always accurate. Hopefully that helps.

In B17-II the mighty Eight, they actually had rec films of the target to give you an idea of the release point. maybe having the ability to put similar tracks into the briefing would give a better idea of the target?

Yes, download T.}{.O.R.s Level Bombing manual. I couldn't hit a thing with high-altitude bombing before I read this. Now it's almost too easy - until you allow for the flak, and the enemy fighters, and not forgetting the problems of getting lined up with the target in the first place....
Thanks, T.}{.O.R., for demonstrating that even an old dog like me can learn new tricks, with the right guidance. That reminds me, I've got to try out an unmentionable mod 4-engined bomber I've downloaded from an unmentionable mod website to see how accurately I can drop a 12,000 lb Tallboy bomb (you didn't read that here ![]() |

Thank you for using it. I am always glad to hear that someone made good use of my manual and learned something out of it. This means I didn't waste my time making it, even though mods were behind the corner at the time.

With the HE111, I'd worked out an aiming point between my pilots rudder pedals at a certain speed, which was fairly accurate. Details sketchy as it was so long ago, but it can be done.
