How safe is flying?

I know there are a few real pilots on here so id thought id ask, just how safe flying is? I love flight games and films but frigin hate the experience myself (odd?)
I'm flying out to NYC on Saturday (gutted cause it'll only give me one day to play BOP before i go) and im not looking forward to the flying bit
