How safe is flying?

I know there are a few real pilots on here so id thought id ask, just how safe flying is? I love flight games and films but frigin hate the experience myself (odd?)
I'm flying out to NYC on Saturday (gutted cause it'll only give me one day to play BOP before i go) and im not looking forward to the flying bit :(

Think the most recent statistic for commercial airliner travel is 1 fatal accident per 2 million flights*. 1:2000000 are good odds in my book!

* according to International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) figures

Definitely safer then driving, just an example: my friend was driving on the 101 interstate, the road was dry, it was on a beautiful Tuesday afternoon, light traffic, the usual stuff, when all of a sudden an airplane crashed into him....
:-P

Flying is very safe man, when i first started my training i was scared beyond belief (why?) turns out that I have this trust issue who people flying(my flight instructor like to screw with me...), however when im flying its totally fine.

Statistically it's the safest way to travel. If you're flying in Africa it's a different story due to terrible maintenance, but everywhere else the controls are quite strict and airline pilots usually are well selected.

I enjoy every flight - it's a real pleasure for me and I plan to get a PPL soon

I have a friend that flies, and the regulations appear to be SOOO strict, you cant even cough without radio-ing in first and having the flight frame checked :) you're 100% safe, go for it, you'll have a great time. just dont try going over the white house... restricted air-space and all that, no-one wants to see F/A-18's next to them :)
