Doug: Some people in the flight sim community are concerned about the future and well-being of Storm of War: Battle of Britain claiming it has been in development much longer than they expected, so there must be something wrong. Can you put their mind at ease and say that Storm of War: Battle of Britain's future is bright, and there is not a reason to be concerned for the project?

Oleg: First, a reminder that IL-2 Sturmovik was in development for over 4 years before it was released. Then many years of modifications and adding new features in add-ons followed. Without the right engine design to allow modifications in the beginning of the IL-2 project, we would never have seen the IL-2 series come to life. But keep in mind IL-2 Sturmovik was only one title.

The Storm of War series engine and the first product, Storm of War: Battle of Britain is many times more complex than the engine in the IL-2 series. Also, the content itself is in some cases a hundred times more complex than in the IL-2 series. And that is not all. We have added new features into the Storm of War series engine that will give Storm of War a long, long life. Maybe even longer than the IL-2 series engine. We are building for the "next level" of quality and features. This takes much more time in development than it takes for one product title. Another benefit of having the Storm of War series engine — we will have 1-1.5 years production time for each follow-up title. Future titles from the Storm of War series will see the market with much less time in development compared to the initial release of the Storm of War series engine and the first series title, Storm of War: Battle of Britain.

I wonder if they're having memory issues with SOW, as most PC's only have a 32 bit OS and can only address about 3G memory. Empire totol war had this issue and they needed to rewrite their EXE to address 64 data space. i'm no guru but apparently it extends addressable memory to 3.5G.

Of course having a 64 OS solves this issue.

The hunt for Bismarck is exciting, but SOW:BOB (or whatever it name will be) is probably going to focus on dogfighting. As you know, the airwar against Bismarck was without any participation from Luftwaffe. I suppose such a mission will have few people flying it. The Swordfish itself is a plane that probably falls under the "crap-plane" designation. As a shipborn torpedoplane it was really good, but only in areas where there was little or no aerial oposition. And as such, it is a relatively uniterresting plane in a dogfight sim.

It is possible to use the stock IL-2T plane and the Tirpitz allready in the game to create a mission that resembles the hunt for Bismarck, but it is of course not the same without the correct plane.

indeed, but remember also that despite being very restricted to the pacific theater, several maritime strikes have occured in the european theater. As such, perhaps you should also incorporate several vessels and specialised planes to deal with them. either military ships, or convoys/patrol ships.

And what about subs?

I always thought subs should have been improved in IL-2. Sinking a submerged sub in IL-2 is almost impossible.
Another feature that would have been nice is if the sub had started out surfaced and then could submerge.

Default 2011?

I'm not so concerned about the date of release as Iam about the system requirements to run the sim at a decent frame rate with at least middle graphics level....so far I've seen nothing, and wonder just how may people will have the gear, or be willing to upgrade to run SOW properly. I'm still blown away by IL2 frane rates on my old system....even at the highest graphic settings it runs great.

I already bought everything new for new system,memory,new Corsair 850W PSU,SSD from Intel,HDD,DVD drive,new HAF case,new 26 Dell monitor.
I'm only waiting for Sandy Bridge 2600,the MoBo, and ATI 6990 or Nvidia GTX 580 (only waiting if ATI will do good drivers for SOW)

/\ Given he has a 26" monitor, this is one of the rare occasions where SLI would actually be appropriate.

IL-2 is pretty old, and throwing an i7 system with the newest Radeon and 8GB of ram isn't going to get you much more than your old 2.5GHZ P4 with a Radeon 9800 and 2 GB of Ram. The game is not optimized for today's newer OS's and hardware. SOW is, and will benefit more from additional CPU's and RAM.

I'm sure we'll see the Swordfish at some point... but really the Bismarck is a boring battle compared to the other crowning achievement of the Swordfish: The attack at Taranto. That's something that's really interesting from an aviation standpoint... Something that I'm imagining that we'll see in the North Africa/Med update that has been talked about for some time.
