WHEN IS THIS GOING TO GET FIXED?

Application aborted!
.\.BMRender\rmode.cpp(2575): DirectX call failed: -1, -1,D3DERR_INVALIDCALL (The method call is invalid. For example, a method's parameter may not be a valid pointer)

This happens in BOTH the Demo AND the full version....

You would think a bug that does not even allow the person to play the game would be top priority in getting fixed.

Someone replied to me saying this would be fixed in the next patch.. god knows when that will be.... they said in the next few days.. but that's long gone already

Default Various problems running demo on Windows XP inside Parallels 3.0 / Mac OSX

My situation is a little bit ridiculous. My computer is a MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo; 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM; GeForce 8600M GT [128 MB VRAM]; Mac OS X version 10.4.11). I have Parallels 3.0, however, so I thought I might be able to play the demo by making a Windows XP virtual machine to play on. Since I got the demo, however, I've had nothing but trouble. Here's a list of my problems, in chronological order, and how I got past all of them but the last one.

Problem 1: An error claiming that I was missing "d3dx9_33.dll" when I first tried to run the demo.
Solution 1: That file can be downloaded from a number of websites. I got it from this site and stuck it in the C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder.

Problem 2: Another error message reading ".\BMRender\rmode.cpp(1595): DirectX call failed: -1, -1, D3DERR_NOTAVAILABLE (This device does not support the queried technique)".
Solution 2: After poking around in the Parallels configuration editor for a while, I found a check-box labeled "Enable DirectX support". Checking it resolved the second error message.

Problem 3: The screen flashed random static as soon as I started the demo and the program crashed with the error "unknown r_path 'ps20'".
Solution 3: In C:\Program Files\1C Company\King’s Bounty - The Legend demo\data there are a couple of .ini files. In "default.ini" changing the line "sets ~r_path "ps20"" to "sets ~r_path "auto"" resolved the problem, allowing the game to finally launch.

Problem 4: The game sort of launches - the 1C Company and Katauri Interactive logo videos play, and the menu screen comes up with some music playing. However, as soon as I do anything (press any key or move/click the mouse), the music starts sounding like a broken record for a moment and a "KB.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close" bug report window pops up.
Solution 4: I'm here to find out.

Should I post the dxdiag report for my virtual machine here? It doesn't say that anything is out of date. Perhaps the resources Parallels allots to the Windows XP virtual machine are below the minimum system requirements.

where is this Parallels configuration editor you're talking about?

You know what the funny part is? I USED to be able to play the demo perfectly fine. That's why I even bought it.

Now the demo doesn't work either anymore..

PATCH DID NOT RESOLVE THE KID'S RANDOMNESS

The kids are still not random even after loading a game. I got the same kid five times now after loading, incidentally he happens to be the very same kid I had first my previous game. John +10 rage for my warrior.

Huh? Are you complaining that you can't reload from save files to get a different kid if you don't like the one you got? That's a feature, not a bug.

Patch notes say different, in particular "Children are chosen from the list randomly after loading when loading the same saved game."

I think that's a description of the bug that they fixed.

The way the notes are written does not lend to this interpretation. All bug fixes are followed by 'fixed.' Thus the quoted language seems to suggest that you could now get a second roll for a child. But then again... Some official say on the matter would be nice.

As I said above, my computer is a Mac; I use a program called Parallels to create a virtual computer with Windows XP. Unless you are using a similar setup, my solution won't help you. However, if you too are getting the error ".\BMRender\rmode.cpp(1595): DirectX call failed: -1, -1, D3DERR_NOTAVAILABLE (This device does not support the queried technique)", my case suggests that you might resolve it by updating or adjusting DirectX.
