Problem solved! It seems to have been one simple option in my 3D settings.
In the 'Antialiasing - Mode' setting, I had the 'Override any application setting' chosen. This gave me a 50% DECREASE in frame rate compared to my old card. After selecting the 'Enhance the application setting' option, I now get at least a 30% INCREASE compared to my old card. Thanks to all who responded! Aviar
