On a slightly different but related note, I continue to fiddle with older game installs in Win 8. I installed but could not get the original IL-2 Sturmovik to run. Didn't try very hard but kept getting some memory error... ?

On the other hand, MS Combat Flight Sim 2 from 1998 to 2000 installed and ran without a hiccup. Keeping the age in mind the graphics aren't bad and the gameplay is decent.

I was also able to install Just Flight's Battle of Britain Memorial Flight from 2001 on top of MS-CFS2. That was also a very nice piece of work for the time. Remember really nice detailed manuals and docs that you could hold in your hand and prop up on your desk.

I almost never had a computer that was really up to running these programs at the time I purchased them. Kinda fun seeing them on a system that far exceeds the required specs.

The original Microprose Falcon 4.0 inc the 1.08 final patch installed and runs very well. I have the original 2 1/2 inch thick 3-ring binder version. You can still appreciate the "oh wow" reaction it got at the time and is still appealing today.
Edit: Also easily installed the latest SuperPak mods which really add to all aspects of the game. Nice job.

A couple of Rowan / Empire titles I have tried so far play the intro screens and setup ok but then go black when you try to run a mission.
