I own the Steam version of IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946. I'd like to play through the game in linear order, starting with the original game's tutorials, and moving through each campaign in the game in order as they appeared on the release copy, followed by the tutorials and campaigns as they were released in the expansion packs by date. The 1946 collection lists the missions and tutorials out of their release order, meaning that it lists contents from the expansion packs and more difficult planes and missions. I have been advised to take a learning path other than the one the game provides via tutorials and campaigns, as the unofficial resources may be of improved design and understanding of what is required to gain mastery. I like to have some tool of measurement for knowing that I'm reaching completion of the game; IL-2 is a simulator, not an arcade, and is nearer to being a sandbox game due to the number of mods, custom campaigns, and unofficial guides, so players have never really beaten the game. It's the open nature of the game that makes me want to work from the basic, core game, and work my way outwards with all of the unofficial material.
One unofficial way to complete it in a linear order would follow missions as they occurred historically by theater of operations for a single country, then to replay the campaign when it branched off at the latest. The second unofficial way to complete in linear order would be to play every mission in which one model of plane was ever seen in, in order of invention and release to combat. This means that it wouldn't be a single instance of the model followed, but the dates any instances of the model was in a mission. The third unofficial method would be to complete missions as they occurred historically by date, first as one side, then replaying the same mission as any additional models seen in the flight by one side, then as the opposite side, then as any additional models seen by the opposite side. An accurate completion of the missions would require a list of all of the combat planes that were present in combat missions and a list of all combat missions (including when and where they took place, the result of the fighting (including which targets were confirmed damaged or destroyed, and which were not confirmed), and the weather conditions). |

Complete the game? I don't know how long you're expecting to live but this "game" is bottomless and like the universe always expanding, lol! You never beat this game, you may "win" by getting home alive and that's it. If you have time to devote, try googling "Joint Ops" and sign up.
You can get rid of steam by getting the missing files from "SAS" and patching up to 4.11.1m, which will allow you to create modded installs and devote more computer power to the game instead of something running in the background, doing who knows what. Best advice, pick a plane and stick with it until you a) understand how to fly and b) can fly your plane really well and by that I mean fly it like they did originally in ww2. Welcome anyway and enjoy playing, but beating the game is just a tad ambitious, but good luck with that, you'll need it. |

UberDemon released a pack with the original IL-2 missions on his site, but has been down for five years. http://forums.ubi.com/showthread.php...vik-and-Demos? Quote:
DBW's 1916 pack http://mail.mission4today.com/index....wnloads3&c=107 is a collection of early WWI combat missions, but it doesn't necessarily collect all of the engagements that ever existed for the Nieuport 11, S.E.5, Morane-Saulnier L, Fokker M.5, and every prototype or model version made of those planes. Instead, it gives representational missions for an overall impression of the combat, rather than any specific historical skirmish, of which there should be hundreds. |

My advice is to get HSFX6 (requires 4.11) or the DBW 1.71 Superpack (requires 4.07 which is the stock dvd install version) for a better gameplay experience.
I'm using DBW and it does a great upgrade on the default map and aircraft and vehicle textures and 3d. Both HSFX and DBW will leave your stock dgen campaigns untouched. Imho its better to add the dgen patch by EnjoyR before you start to play thu all the campaigns because it will add a complete and more or less final campaign list to choose from (130 dynamic campaigns). Download link: http://www.mission4today.com/index.p...etails&id=1972 This works with the stock game too so you dont need mods to use it. You maybe need to edit your conf.ini to set the length of the generated campaigns to short or medium because by default you get the longest campaigns: http://www.mission4today.com/index.p...op=show&kid=28 Cheers Istvan |

Joey, sorry you couldn't spare the time for Joint Ops, me neither as it happens. You could try and find yourself a squad and learn quicker with them, but again it is a regular time commitment, usually one or two evenings a week. Regarding training missions, there were some in the earliest version of the game which were interactive, where you could take over control of the plane and practice what had just been demonstrated, but they have not survived changes to the game engine as the game has been upgraded. There are no training missions in the game just movies you can watch.
Briefly, the game was originally called Il2 and was version 1.0, this is a different game to 4.11.1 as the game engine underwent radical changes when reformulated and released as "Forgotten Battles" which was version 4.01. Subsequently another game "Pacific Fighters" was released which could be added to Forgotten Battles install and then the game became the "merged version" (4.04) which explains the "m" in 4.11.1m which you see in the lower left hand corner of the screen when the game loads. This 4.04 and later addons were released on dvd as Il2 1946 v4.07. This is the base version to which all patches are added now. Your game version inside steam will crash upon loading should you attempt to mod it with hsfx or dbw. Find the Il2 folder in your steam folder and copy it somewhere else on your harddrive. Depending which version of bungling bills bloatware you have, it's probably best to make a folder called c: games and put it in that. This will allow you to make changes to the conf.ini folder without windoze complaining or preventing them. You will need to find this patch from SAS: "Direct 2 Drive Patch for all versions". Download this and add to your copied game folder as per instructions. You will need to register first. I suggest you stick to playing this new vanilla 4.11.1 for now, whilst learning. Make another copy of this virgin 4.11 as a backup which you can then copy again should you wish to add a mod pack ontop. It's not unusual to have 4 or 5 versions or more of il2. Copy Il2.exe to your desktop from the new folder and you can play like the rest of us, without steam. You could delete the steam version or keep as backup whatever, but you will no longer need steam to play. This is important if you wish to play online via Hyperlobby as it doesn't play well with steam. I also suggest that you find the games pdf manual in Il2 game folder and read it, there are other pdf's in there which have/should also to be read. This game is quirky even odd at times and the answers are in the manual. (possibly!) The IL2 bible (The Nuggets Guide) is here: http://forums.ubi.com/showthread.php...ik-Essentials? together with Sturmovik essentials which gives links to almost all Il2 related websites. You may like to try the original il2 game demo for free from mission4today, you will have to register but it's probably the best Il2 related site there is. You will also find there thousands of missions and campaigns made by players over the years. Some very early missions do not work or misbehave with 4.11 because some map heights have been changed over years, but most will work. Some of the campaigns Vpmedia listed for you have over 100 missions and by reason of statistics alone you will have little chance of completing it without being killed at least once, but good luck.... |
