The castle has the flashing quest icon above it to indicate that I am ready to proceed on the quest, but talking to King Asvald has no dialog options about this quest.

More of a workaround, actually. RCDOWN suggests:

Reload a savegame before you get to the castle, remove the flag from inventory and place it into another position (in inventory). Then click on the info dialog box and then talk to the viking and dwarf king.
