Or join a server thats already up... I disagree with your analysis that its steam... Has anything changed on yours or your friends machine? IP, Routers, Firewalls, UAC, antispyware and antivirusware?

Do you both have the same patch version? 1.05, 1.06, 1.07 or 1.08?

Thanks for the link. My issue is not described there.

It's version 1.05. My friends machine is new and COD was the second thing he installed after steam. my machine has just been rebuilt after upgrading my harddisk to solid state. No further software has been installed since il2 on either machine.

Ports are correctly forwarded, and we can connect to each other's server. We are hosting the stock maps that came with the SIM. The problem is we cannot select a side once connected.

if nothing has changed on the machines and we have not patched past what Steam have rolled out what else could it be.

Check realism options, there should be an option named "Can't select side" or something like that (I don't have the game in english), make sure that it's not selected. Most of the options in the same box as that one should not be selected too.

Thanks. I'll try that when I get home and I'll post back what happens.

Nice one. All the "Cannot" settings, bar the last, had been checked. I am not quite sure how this happened as I had not been into that tab, but I don't care now
