Which sector airfields dispatched to which satellite airfields?
Which RAF sector airfields dispatched to which satellite airfields?
Im researching a mission that Im building for the 18th August 1940. I have the german ones done. Im looking for the RAF placement but my usual sorces are drawing blanks or sector airfields only. Was there a method where Sector airfields always deployed to certain satellite airfields? Last edited by 5./JG27.Farber; 02-25-2012 at 01:12 PM. |

Off the top of my head I know that RAF Tangmere used RAF Westhampnet as a satellite.

There is a list of some sector and satellite airfields here:

Thanks for the help but I usually steer well clear of wikipedia, for example there is no Hawkinge on that list and it was one of the MAJOR satellite fields.

My apologies, this was something I came across whilst looking for something else. I have since had another look avoiding that particular site. What I have found is this: A Tangmere satellite Westhampnett (and later Ford) B Kenley satellite Croydon and occasionally West Malling C Biggin Hill satellites Detling, Gravesend, Hawkinge, Lympne, West Malling D Hornchurch satellites Rochford, occasionally Detling and Manston (Biggin Hill also used Manston I believe) E North Weald satellites Stapleford Tawney, occasionally Martlesham Heath F Debden satellites Castle Camps, Martlesham Heath Z Northolt no real satellite but occasionally Heathrow and Hendon from September 1940 information on the net is quite hard to find in this regard, however you might be interested in the following sites: http://www.battleofbritain1940.net/0006.html http://www.thesoutheastecho.co.uk/11..._airfields.htm and the map at the bottom of this one: http://www.battleofbritain1940.net/document-12.html I hope this is of somewhat more use to you than my last effort. ~S~ |

I found that first site myself, do you know what the graphs mean and what the units are for the numbers?

The vertical axis is the squadrons stationed at the field and the horizontal axis is days for July, August and September.
So looking at Biggin Hill: 32 Squadron was there through July and up to 27th August with hurricanes, further down that graph we see that 141 Squadron spent time there in July and then at the end of August and all of September with their Bolton Paul Defiants. ~S~ Last edited by Marco37; 02-28-2012 at 07:03 PM.
