You can exit the cockpit view after landing, Alt-F2. It removes you from the plane, and gives you an external view of it, even in Full Real servers. Drawback is you cannot get back into your plane.

You can use it to examine damage after landing, at least for a couple of minutes before the plane itself is despawned.
