is there any place where i can download the patch without steam. it does not seem to work well with my connection...?

No need to. It's included in June 24, 2011 - v1.02.14821 Release Patch.
U can't choose patchlevel with steam. You'll by auto get the latest one. When u load the game check for version number at lower right side. Current is 1.02.14821.
