I got the ps3 eye with facetrack noir, uses about 7% cpu for me, not sure about ram, it does occasionly glitch and you have to wait for it to auto restart itself, I'm far to lazy to do the free track, though I might get a trackir at some stage.Between clod and fsx I need all the cpu I can get.

heres what you can expect with facetracknoir, ps3eye and an i7

Don't waste your money on trackir, just buy the trackclip pro. I've bought the PS3 to use FTNOIR, but i'm using freetrack with the trackclip and it is the same thing as using trackir 4 (yes, i tested the 2 myself), i don't think it can get any better than ps3 eye + track clip pro (or if you abandon lazyness a custom homemade trackclip)

I bought the PS3 Eye to use with FTNoIR also, but I want to try Freetrack without modifying the Eye (In case I want to go back to FTNoIR). I was thinking of just attaching a floppy in front of the Eye's lens, and testing with an IR light source before buying a trackclip pro.

Did you modify the Eye? I'm looking for someone who is using the Eye with Freetrack without removing the IR filter.

To test without removing the IR lens, just tape a section of floppy disk over the lens and use a typical TV/video remote control to generate the IR source. Reduce the exposure and see if you can get a dot without stray interference. It will pulse but thats what it should do from a remote control.

A lot of peeps are using the non-moddable PS3 eye's perfectly OK with IR LED's.

That's exactly what I was planning to do! Good to hear it should work okay, now I can compare the two without modifying the Eye.

Also I'm hoping at some point maybe more opensource software similar to the PS Move will come to the PC, and since Move is based on regular LEDs, I would rather leave the Eye as is, with the IR filter intact.

Thanks again for all the help, I'm linking over the other thread, since jayrc started two, and this one's more active:

if the floppy is too much, try a developed camera film, i use it and works very good.
