Wow, I didnt know they still were that expensive. $340. Wow.

It would be an upgrade for your system but if you want to save, save up the dough you have now and move to a faster platform in a few months. If thats not an option, and you need to do it right now, go for it. Your motherboard is practically made for Quads and it is one of the best P45 motherboards you can find.

If you play ROF, hell to the yes. If they keep patching up CloD like they do now, and it can fully utilize a Quad, hell yes again.

Im still holding on for Ivy Bridge this fall, upgrading drives etc. instead right now so that I can just get a core upgrade when lga2011 gets available.

No, it would not entail an OS reinstall.

For the price of the quad you can get an i5 2500 sandybridge, microatx mobo and 4gb ram.
SO why on earht would you dump 340 for an old quad when you cen get the i5 2500, mobo and 4gigs ram for same price

I wouldnt upgrade to SB if budget meant I had to get a mediocre system. In a short while, Sandy Bridge wont look as awesome as it does now. A Q9650 still holds its own in gaming. Its all the extra crap that it lacks but sheer clock for clock gaming performance is still very good.

2011 is the year of several awesome releases, first we get Sandy Bridge, then AMD FX Bulldozer cpus for AM3 and then we get Ivy Bridge LGA2011. If I didnt have the money to go full bore right now, having a system similar to ElAurens(which I do lol), saving up a bit for a full bore upgrade that lasts another two three years is the way to go. IMHO!

I just paid £145 for a Q9650.. 2nd hand, but I dont think I will hav any probs with it... So why not look for an upgrade that is more affordable, the 2nd hand market...

I replaced my E8400 with a used Q9650 (ebay) in my now 3+ years old gaming rig. Extremely easy upgrade. I sold my used E8400 on ebay so my net cost was about $140, including the $12 thermal compound! No regrets!

According with Intel performance preview,Ivy Bridge will have a 20% performance gain over SB clock for clock.
But you need to consider that CoD is very far to do good use of SB,so if you later this year buy a IB processor,I doubt any gain will be noticed.
Only if the code is already optimized at the time to really put the CPU and the GPU to actually work...
