Many of the photos people are preferring as "more correct" have clearly been taken with a polarized lens. Polarised lenses with landscape photos give a more dramatic result. Yes you are perfectly right. Not all but many was done by this way if it was professional photograper.
In my photos that I was shooting from the air myself I didn't use polarizer, however in a soft I was removing the effect what is doing the glass of windows and canopy.
