If the question, is who was the first Russian Ace. Then it's my answer. But if it's the highest scoring Russian Ace, then it's Ivan Nikitovich Kozhedub aka "Ivan the Terrible".

So if I'm following all of this, it sounds like McCampbell was stationed on one of the fleet carriers that didn't actually get to do much during the main Battle of Leyte Gulf. However, from the Wiki article it is clear that he was flying Hellcats during at least the Battle of Sibuyan Sea (24 Oct):
