I am on xbox and to be honest, I am really bad at aiming with the gamepad

I can follow a plane quit long time but its more luck than skill when I shoot one donw

maybe I just have to practice more.

Practice always helps. I did notice when using the joystick it's easier to maintain your crosshairs on the right position, making it less shaky.

I'm a gamepad player and consider my self to be a competitive pilot (yet I still get schooled regularly by the IL2 veterans ) so I think you can succeed with both really, it's just about personal preference.

I play on the PS3, but this applies to the xbox also, far as I know. On realistic and sim difficulty settings, you're gonna want to turn down the aileron and elevator sensitivity settings when playing with a controller. Just how much is gonna depend on how it feels to you. Just a heads up, thought I'd help you avoid some frustration.
