Everyone's always talking about 'immersion', how can a flight sim be immersive if you don't ask for permission to land?!
Or am I a really sad b*st*rd?!
Tab-8-4. I do it too. I THINK it keeps some wingmen from crashing into me but I wouldn't be surprised if it has no effect at all.

I've also been known to ask for permission to tak eoff

Yes, i think that requesting landing clearance sets the AI wingmen from "follow the leader on his landing approach with my gear and flaps up, stall and crash into him" mode to "circle the field" mode.

I usually also order them to land when i'm safely on the ground or on finals, if they haven't yet hit the last waypoint where they automatically switch into a trail formation for landing.

If you want, I can link the full review at 'AVSIM Commercial FSX Sim Review' but here is a small section concerning the authors opinion of the FM in WOP.

"On Simulation mode, you see the most fidelity to realistic flight models, if that means anything. The fighters all tend to be universally nimble, armoured bombers are slow but absorb a lot of damage, and the jets are wicked fast. Horsepower rather than agility seems to set the fighters apart. When they stall, they all stall basically the same, and when they spin, you see the same spin more or less every time. Just mash on the opposite rudder and you should be okay. Crossing the controls (opposite stick and rudder) has no real effect which says to me that the flight models have been simplified at all levels."

WoP is IL2 ported over to the consoles as BoP, then ported back to PC as WoP. I'd be really surprised if they would keep the FMs at the level of IL2 because quite frankly, when you target a specific medium you have to make sure your software is usable with the prevailing user interface methods.

I guess 99% of PC virtual fliers own a joystick and that 1% who don't is the new guys to the hobby who are about to buy one. On the other hand, i doubt even 70% of the console crowd has joysticks (heck, the console compatible ones are a fairly new deal anyway), so something has to give if they want to make sure the player will manage to fly BoP with a gamepad.

Childish comments like "it's crap" don't help anyone.

See my post above I, too, may do it for immersion; but I don't have the time usually to listen to the tower; especially when flying (say) 4 flights strong and I am at the very bottom of that hierarchy
