As far as I understand there is no reason why you can't join a modded server if you've got the standard game. (as long as their patched to the same level ie 4.09m and moded 4.09m)
One problem may occur if the mission designers don't put a standard plane into a mission. If you select a modded plane with out the mods, when you join the mission your hanging in space and can't do anything.
At the moment the problem is nobody has released a moded 4.09m dedicated server yet.
