As Senseispcc said, Steam will update automatically your Cliffs of Dover version once you register with them -- for free as mentioned. PStyle was referring to the latest beta patch that many (most) of us are currently evaluating. Here's an updated link:

http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/showthread.php?t=32916

Download this patch to your PC, then unzip it. Do NOT use Winzip -- it withholds some key files within the "parts" folder that's been zipped. Better to use Winrar (I use 7-Zip, it's free and works fine). Simply do a copy and paste of the new "parts" folder to replace your existing "parts" folder here:

C:/Program(86)/Steam/SteamApps/Common/IL2Sturmovik/parts

You can even extract directly to there, but best done only on a full moon.

After doing a few offline training/orientation missions to get yourself up to speed on the cockpit drill, join us on the ATAG Allies vs Axis Server which is currently running the beta version that PStyle mentioned. Make sure you have Teamspeak 3 (also free) installed -- we're a friendly bunch.

Great! I have TS3 and the training should be interesting because I have played many IL-2 games before ( I have every single one) but not much like this. I might have to post a video! Maby one day we will see each other in the sky's on a server!

Thank you in advance.
Looking for patches you say ? You will need this machine!
I recommend traveling to the year 2020 or later.

There is no choice, steam or no steam! Steam is a obligation without it you cannot play the game, you cannot launch it. I must say to be honest it (steam) does never interfere with the game in itself. Or cause any loss of machine power.
