Hahah, true that

The only advantage this would give me is that i can possibly have my relative in the UK e-mail me the activation keys when he receives my collector's edition, so i can download it from Steam instead of waiting two days for it to arrive in the mailbox.

There are perfectly good reasons to dislike Steam, but "misinformed person said something that one time" is not one of them.

The majority of the PC gamer base uses Steam, and of all publishers Ubisoft is the least likely to listen to a wingey minority.
The epilepsy filter is perfect too, since it allows flash-sensitive epileptics to play computer games. If it's good for someone then it must be good for everyone, right?
See what i did there? The shoe is on the other foot.

All those things you think i "sacrifice" are things that i won't use anyway. The only thing i'm interested in is multiplayer which is not exclusive to Steam anyway (the manual says so).

So, i actually sacrifice nothing if i bypass Steam, as long as i can get updates in the form of stand-alone, self-extracting executables. And the best thing is, 1C doesn't even have to host those and pay for the bandwidth, there's a lot of fan-sites all over the place hosting patches for IL2 already, same thing would happen with CoD.

Long story short, the "steam is the only way" rhetoric is something i don't buy. Steam is just something extra for people that like certain features, it's far from a necessity.

And that's why if i can bypass it on my collector's edition i will. It will make my installation leaner and with less dependencies on other software, which is something i try to do with every game i buy

To tell you the truth, if the publishers don't solve this the community will on its own. It's not hard to bypass Steam, neither is it hard to issue non-Steam versions of Steam patches wrapped in a custom installer. All high profile games get cracked but the versions pirates actually prefer are the Steam versions, because they are the easiest ones to crack and the easiest ones to use patches with even when they are cracked.

Steam bypass will happen anyway, all i'm saying is that it's better if the publishers realize this and give us an official option. If not, there's unofficial ones and it's not illegal in my country to do what i want with the software i buy, as long as it's done for personal use.

I just want some tech-support or feature (call it what you want) from the publishers, instead of having to rely on pirates to provide it. I mean, i'm a legitimate customer, it's highly ironic if pirates are better qualified to help me than the guys who get most of the money i pay for the collector's edition, don't you think?

Unfortunately you can't bypass it. It will force itself onto the HDD even if you don't like it
and I know I don't but I've come to terms with that in order to play this game (if it will
be playable) I must put this Steam worries behind me and just turn off all and everything I
don't want from it

Excellent news just before the release, one after another!

Few things I wonder though and maybe there are perfectly good explanations for thme:

1) Why do we have to learn so much through rumours, some random russion forum links instead of having a 'Developer news' or whatever locked sticky here or some other 'official place' they decide?

2) Did they not notice the stutters approaching the bombers in their testing sessions? If they did why wasn't there release notes that would have listed 'known issues' and a reassuring comment that they will be addressed soon?

I'm not trying break the euphoria here as we have finally have a good vibe going amongst the forums (haven't dared to read SimHQ however). But I've never seen such panic and so many slit wrists in a community than what I saw after the russian release. With active communication I guess that could have been mitigated to some extent atleast.

I get sick of the steam whining. I dont see any problems with steam. And it seems nobody can give me a good reason why this game shouldn't be on steam. Does it take your propeler away? Lol

Sounds weird, never happened to me and I've used it for some time now, try and re-install it. Steam never bothers me and I get great deals sometimes, just wait until the christmas sale for example and you'll see what I mean. I bought Batman: Arkham Asylum Game of The Year Edition for a lousy 7,50€ a few days ago, great game!
