Default Why are scores so important to everyone?

All of this bullcrap about the patch got me wondering, why the hell does anyone give a damn about scores in a video game that is otherwise extremely enjoyable?

I'm only referring to the MP scoring fix that everyone seems so desperate for. Obviously the patch features more fixes than this.

But my point is, when I'm playing, and I fill another player full of enough holes to make him spin out and hit the ground, it feels really great, regardless of whether it says "Player x has crashed" or not. And when all is said and done and the match's winner is declared, who cares? Is it really that important for a game to tell you that you've won?

Now I understand that we all paid money for a product and there are flaws with that product, and I'm looking forward to the patch as much as anyone, but I just don't get the mentality that says "although I love this game, I'm not going to play it until the scoring's fixed".

Any thoughts?
