Default Battlestations TV show (not game) featuring P-51

Jut thought I would share a little story with everybody. I was watching a show called battlestations (I think that was the name) a couple of days ago and the show was talking about the P-51 and it had some of the veteran pilots on there.

So when they started talking about the plane they were saying "this thing looked fast sitting still" and after flying this plane everybody wanted to fly in it.

They were talking about how this plane handled better than any other allied plane and they even went as far to say that if you wanted the plane to roll all you had to do was look in that direction and that is how easy the plane turned. They were giving all kinds of examples of how the plane was supposed to be the next best thing, like flying all they way to Europe and back with B-17's without having to refuel because the plane was built around a fuel tank and also carried fuel pods.

Just thought I would share this with you and hope that Gaijin gets it right with the update because after watching that program that plane should dominate.

I know what you mean, after I watched Dogfights: P-51, I just wanted to go online with the P-51 and replicate the greatness from the episode. Then I remembered it was broken. Hopefully the wait will be worth it though.

but p-51 was designed and served as an escort and multirole plane, not just air superiority. It also had a big advantage in numbers by the time it was used, not many chances for a fw-190 to pin one down into a turning fight long enough to get a kill.

I think the fw-190 is underrepresented also... I'm starting to fly it more cause I like the cannons, but it elevates terribly in il-2. Rolls great though. Perfect for dodging around bombers with.

<> I've seen a few episodes of Dogfight, and it gave the impression that all dogfights are won by American planes, unless they don't involve American planes, in which case they're won by American allies. They even made the f4f wildcat look like it compared to the Zero, by showing Pug Southerland's rare almost-win vs Saburo Sakai.

'docu's' like dogfights are clearly biased. Saying that the P-51 was the best dogfighter is not close to true. At high altitudes, it could outturn a 109, but at low/medium altitudes, it was not a dogfighter at all.

The P-51 in the PC Il-2 1946 is correct. But even choosing it in that game, wont give you many kills. Unless you pick your fights, at high altitude, and boom and zoom.
I normally play in a server were the dogfights are in the 0-7000 ft range. never seen a P-51 with a kill/death ration above 1:5. Spitfires and La will own the P-51 at all time at those altitudes

The BOP P-51 is rubbish for sure. But dont expect it to be a weapon of choice after the update. The dogfights in BOP are close to the ground, with a lot of turning. The 2 biggest weaknesses of the P-51

That's true. I'd honestly like to see some high altitude missions, bombing and escorting, in BoP though. It just seems a lot more exciting for me the higher up you are. But your right Morgoth, everything in BoP is very low altitude. Still, I'd like to try my hand and see what I can do with the post update P-51 though.

Thought this was going to be about Battlestations Pacific. LOL
P-51D was a great plane. You don't escort bombers at 2000 ft. It was a late war plane, it makes sense that it was one of the best of the war.

I'm pretty sure that wasn't in Dogfights..... Are you thinking of the PBS program, Secrets of the Dead? They covered that dogfight. I think that show where the Air Force major flies around in the Texan and talks about historic dogfights also covered it, but Dogfights didn't, I'm all but certain.

Well, I have been to a couple of air shows in my day and if the Horsemen ever come your way, Go see them ! You can also go to their site and sign up and watch some of their videos. www.asb.tv/videos/view.php?v=022754bc

And these stunts are done at low altitude.

They are a Formation Acro team that flys 3 original unmodified P51's. Now you can't even do 5% of these stunts in Il2 1946 with a p51, and these guys are doing them in formation ! I mean come on.
Seeing is believing thats all there is to it, Even if you don't believe the aces that flew the p51 then, go to a air show and watch it for real. Then you'll understand how off the flight model is for the p51 in even il2 1946.
