Thats interesting, I live pretty close to RAF Kinloss (The current government have closed the base down now actually, we flew Nimrods) linked to paint from WWII according to that news report, slow news day I guess?
If deactivating aircraft with that type of paint happened at Kinloss, in the 40's it happened all over the UK and world wide too. Kinloss is very near a hippy commune called the Findhorn Foundation, don't know if they had anything to do with this spark of news though? But I know they were glad to see the back of the base that was there long before their commune was. http://www.findhorn.org/ |

Further looking at the claim.

I can remember glow in the dark toys from my childhood (I'm 52) what landmass are they under now and I've lived all over Europe? I'd be more concerned about the dumping of Nuclear waste from UK power plants that has been going on for decades in Scotland. Dounray anyone. |

This is not just a scottish issue , although this site is a major concern due to soil erosion causing the buried material to become exposed and disperse contaminating the area.
The radium is not particularly dangerous unless particles are ingested ot inhaled or long exposure to the skin ie under finger nails etc. The MOD`s attitude has been frankly disgusting, denying responsibility, not keeping proper records of the contaminated sites, and not supplying information to concerned authorities or even developers who have bought and developed former MOD land. As far as the MOD is concerned if you have bought land that is potentialy contaminated its your problem, nothing to do with them ! The paint was not just used on instruments, even things like ammo containers was painted, or basically anything you may need to see or find at night. All this stuff was broken burned and buried mostly at former RAF bases all over the place. This story is going to run and run with the MOD using its usual tactics of deny and delay until perhaps in about 15-20 yrs some sort of commitee or inquiry will condemn there actions, the MOD will then "deeply regret" and admit "mistakes were made" and that "record keeping" was poor, and they will make "every endevour to locate and monitor these sites" and that "public safety was never compomised" and everyone will say "Oh thats ok then" and go back to wondering who will win the footie, and what celebrity is sleeping with who. |

Thats a promise. But rest assured, and my late dad finished his 21 year RAF career at ex RAF Kinloss, nobody up here knows about this conspiracy. |

Try this for starters
http://www.guardian.co.uk/environmen...ating-uk-sites Search from there. Then you may wish to google radium. Google is your friend. I dont think this is a conspiracy, its just something that happened in the fifties and was conveniently forgotten. Last edited by whoarmongar; 05-19-2012 at 08:37 AM. |

Pilot instruments from that era used that, so did every day wrist watches. Like I said kids from that era had glow in the dark toys with more harmful radiation. ![]() No fuss there, but tiny markers that glowed in the dark to mark incremental of hight, speed or whatever, then we have an issue on that instruments disposal? Get a grip mate. Youre story is a non story, stop being sensational, digging a hole and let it go. Or go work for the Daily Mail. |
