Making movies....

How do you do this? It seems very antiquated. From what I'm understanding , you record a track , and then edit it that way? Isn't there an easier way to do this? Like having a fast forward , rewind , ect controls on the screen to just get the right views this way?

I think it's easier to just use fraps.
