Just got the AV8R......
Wow!! What a difference it is with this compared to a regular controller. I'm new here and a total noob to flight games.
My first try with the av8r was like ... aw crap I'll never get this...but after 20 minutes I was hooked. Ofcourse on simulation I stalled a lot and crashed and burned. I got out of one stall by accident. With the controller pad it was easier to get out of....any tips with the flight stick on how to get out of a stall? Anyways, I'm really excited about the game and can tell it'll take me a loooong time to master this. Can't wait!!!! |

Also watch your speed. If it's too low (<200 km/h / 125 mph) engage WEP (push throttle forward) and push your nose downwards. |
Can someone post a picture of what the controls are?
|
For those with the av8r....what's your most comfortable way of holding it? Did you mount it on a table...hold on your lap....or set it between your legs?
It is pretty hard to reach the buttons facing you. there were a few times I had to use both hands on the stick trying to adjust my aim...it's pretty hardcore...i love it. |
I do fine with the demo holding it in my lap (for online I will more than likely set it on a table). I have added buttons to mine to put controls within reach (I will post a MS word document on how to do this later).
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_wL3f1bGat8Q/Sn...1249251140.jpg I used the larger (soft buttons as they call them) on zoom & trim as they are comfortable to press & hold with the knuckle on your thumb whilst still working the throttle. If you are left handed you will want them on the other side of course. Unfortunately this is where the main board is located so you will have little space (but you should have run off & joined the circus long ago anyway you freak;)). Seriously though if you are interested in this mod PM me & I'll help you through it. The main board can be easly reloacated with a bit of glueing/cutting of the plastic bits that hold it in place. |
I find that the Aviator (once modded as above) is much easier to use than the ace edge for the conslole version of IL-2. It has enough buttons for all of the commands, can be held in your lap, and is much easier to work whilst drinking a beer (or beverage of your choice).

was it this one? if it was the model was really cool...not so futuristic kindda like it very much |
That model is the Aviator1 it is only for use on PC. You want to buy the one I have pictured in my previous post if you want it to work on Xbox360.

Is this like one of those TV magician tricks, where you are picturing it in your mind and we see it? |

versapak- oops guess my pic doesn't show the front bit of the controller, you got me:mrgreen:
moneytension- this is the one you should be looking to buy (there are 2 seperate aviators for xbox & ps3) http://ps3maven.com/wp-content/uploa...ek-aviator.jpg |

p/s: reverend you'd spelled my names all wrong  fyi monyet mean monkey in english ;-) |
Oops sorry about spelling incorrectly (I work as a buyer so MONEY is the first word to mind). as far as purchase if I was you I would go with the Thrustmaster. I would have bought it myself if it was offered for the Xbox360. A HOTAS setup is always preferable. As you can see I had to go to great lengths to make the Aviator work for me. The Thrustmaster looks like a superior controller. I would however hold off until the demo comes out next week for PS3 & ask some of the guys that have bought the thrustmaster about its merits. It has not been labeled as supported for the game as of yet & I would hate to see you waste your money.

I actually just got mine today, and tried out the demo.. the stick is amazing, I was having second thoughts about getting it when people said it wasn't that great.. but it actually is, I have no idea what they're talking about. The only thing I can see is the small deadzone I barely noticed, and the small 'Hat' style analog which feels kinda awkward using. I landed seccessfully multiple times with little effort, and the plane never flipped. And dogfighting is much easier now.
Since my 360 is next to my PC, and I play on the same TV Monitor at my computer desk, I play with the joystick on the keyboard section of it, and it feels really comfortable and works out great. Down the road when I get more money to spend freely, I will one day get myself a Hori Flight Stick for the 360, but for now.. I really like my Aviator. |
Porcho- As far as the deadzone I have found that the ziptie mod works great for eliminating the sudden jerk from center. It's a very cheap (damn near free) mod that helps considererably.
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_wL3f1bGat8Q/Sn...0802092720.jpg Just compress the middle of the spring (I'm using 3 now). You can get zipties at any hardware store. |
Ha, yeah I was planning on doing that, just got to pick me up some. Seems like a neat idea.
[Edit]: Just curious, anyone think of a way the way down the base of the stick more; make it heavier so its more sturdy and less prone to move when you make sudden movements? |

i hav been reviewing Thrust Master for a quite sumtime already...well i juz wait for awhile till sumone cum out wiv their personal feedback on the TM flight stick. |
Porcho- You can buy suction cups at the hardware store for the base.
http://www.motorera.com/dictionary/p...uction_cup.jpg just drill holes in the base (make sure there are no electronics there) and push them through. Then you can stick the controller to a smooth surface. |
^^^that's a good idea...I was thinking of some way to vice mine down but don't wanna break it.
|
I find it's ok on my lap but with a very big book, like an atlas or something, to rest it on. This is still a console game so as a point of principle I refuse to play it any other way than slumped back on the couch.

Try looking at speaker stands with a decent base. A lot do have small bases but if you look around you might find something like the one in the picture below which I use (the stick is a CH Products Fighterstick that I use for PC sims) The base is wide enough so that the stick can be used without the stand moving around and I just use some sticky back heavy duty velco that you can pick up from most hardware stores for a few pounds. The stuff I use is really good, according to the blurb on the back of the box a small square around 50mmx50mm will hold 1kg of weight. The speaker stands were around £10 for a pair so with the cost of the velcro on top altogether a nice joystick stand cost me £14
