B-17 Destroyed by fire in USA..
Some sad news for B-17 lovers (Close your eyes gilly!)
Chicago Tribune Story |
I'm glad because the crew escaped, but it's a real shame for the plane :(
|
what a sad day. glad the crew escaped but there inst much to rebuild there.
|
Did you read the whole story?
Forgetting its modern day, you could almost imagine that it was 1944 and this bird was limping home by the way some witnesses were describing it.... quite eery really, especially as their was "a little friend" flying on the wing, like a escort or something similar. The plane is a mess, but FULL CREDIT must be given to the pilot, he managed to set her down extremely well and not only saved the lives of everyone on board, but also prevented serious injury to civilians on the ground. |

i read there was an engine fire. the pilot feathered the engine and i would suppose hit the extinguisher as well. but if the fire was caused by leaking fuel...and the fuel ran inside the wing the extinguisher may not have been able to reach that far. once it starts there rubber insulation on wires....hydraulic hose, etc that will feed the fire. fire in a plane is the mother of all B!T<#es....especially if you dont have a chute!
