I was in Game Station today and I noticed a new flight sim Heros over Europe, has anyone played this? Is it any good?

The graphics aren't nearly as nice as IL2 - and the game is ARCADEY.

Arcadey as in, a LOT more arcadey than Arcade mode in IL2.

Its like blazing angels.... on acid!!

Its the sequel (i think??) to the original xbox game heros of the pacific. It wont be anywhere near as good as IL2.

Metacritic for Heroes over Europe (http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/xbox360/heroesovereurope?q=Heroes%20Over%20Europe) 62%
Metacritic for IL2-BOP (http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/xbox360/il2sturmovikbirdsofprey?q=bird%20of%20prey) 80%

From OXM UK "With IL-2 asserting impressive air superiority in the last month or so, there's no reason to pick up this ropier and less satisfying interpretation of the same conflict. Technically unimpressive and snooze-inducing, it's less "chocks away" and more "chock this in the bin"

Out of the box Heroes over Europe has three strikes against it.
First; there's only a third person chase view available. No cockpit view or first person HUD view.
Second; there's no replay feature.
Thirdly (and this is the worst omission HoE has to offer); there is no flight stick support, even for the PC version, and there is no controller remapping function.

Transmission Games (formally I.R.Gurus) should change their name again, ...this time to Major Malfunction Games.

As i discovered:) Appearently HotP was a more than decent xbxo game (iirc that had cockpit view) but its sequel HoE is a let down for me.

I have "Heroes of the Pacific" for the PS2 and it's a pretty fun game even though it was VERY arcadey. Even had a cockpit view... so I'm not sure what went wrong with this sequel?? I heard the developer ran into some money problems, so I'm sure that was part of it...

I unfortunately got this yesterday.
Good points,
1. The artwork is top notch, menus and cutscenes- the graphic artists did an excellent job here.
2. The graphics are very good, the ground detail seems slightly better than il-2 although the color palate me be less realistic.

Unfortunately,
1. The 3rd person view is nauseating, the point of view shifts around behind the aircraft and the crosshair moves slightly around the screen.
2. No Radar.
3. No free look. You get a button for rear view or you can hit select button and pan around while flying in a straight line.

Thats about all I could find , I only flew 2 missons the stopped playing when I
was required to shoot mines out of the path of friendly vessels.

Apparently the upper management decided to ship an unfinished game.

Rival is not even a fair assessment; I am a fan of the original Heroes of the Pacific, and this sequel is a completely stripped down, bare bones experience compared to the original.

IL-2 is a much more satisfying an experience.
Mind you, I have been looking forward to Heroes for a couple years now. When I saw the previews for IL-2, I was psyched to know that I would be getting 2 awesome flight games for the 360.

Only problem is, one game lived up to my expectations.....and it isn't Heroes.

I give IL-2 a 9.5/10
Hoe = 6.7/10

If you can't resist, just rent HOE. I am sad to say it, but the truth is the truth.:(

Don't forget if you're on the PS3 that every game is region free (although if the servers are region-specific that can be an issue, but it ain't for IL-2 :D.

Hardly surprising to find another flying game being dismissed on a fanboy forum like this one lol.

I took IL2 out on rental and passed.

I took HoE out on rental and I'm buying it.

Sturmovik is the better simulator but HoE is by far the better game. There is a difference. The vast majority of gamers out there are a million miles away from the people who form the main membership of this forum. They haven't somehow convinced themselves that they've flown WWII fighters for real and really don't give a rat's ass whether they can use a joystick or not. What they want is a game that has no pretensions and delivers a fast and fun gaming experience in both single and multi player. Sturmovik could have delivered this AND its niche market simulation offerings. It didn't, it won't, and that's why it's a dead game online already except for a small handful of aviation bores and boosters.

Sturmovik makes too many mistakes and has way too many obvious omissions to ever be more than a very minor cult hit among the aircraft nerd community.

Mock HoE as you like, I bet we see a sequel for it though. That's not a guarantee for a failure like Sturmovik.

Well said that man!!

I'm not going to slate HoE because it's almost a completely different type of game and caters for the more casual flight enthusiast, if this in turn helps newcomers to the genre, who may then appreciate the finer qualities of IL-2, then it is a good thing.

Heroes of the Pacific is one of my favorite games of all-time. So I was looking foward to HoE.

But from what I hear, HoE is not even as good as HotP. So that would put HoE in the minor leagues compaired to BoP.

Back on topic now...

HoP was a superb game at the time, but since then more advanced games have come out, things haves progressed slightly. HoE hasn't jumped on the bandwagon. They have kept it how it once was, but have somehow taken the good things from it and made it worse!!! IL2 is the flying game to play, whether it be arcade or sim you like...IL2 offers it.

@ Flying Coffin

In all fairness HoE is getting pretty bad reviews and write ups everywhere, it's not just here.

Most members here are keen flying game fans and would love to have a good selection of games on offer, especially as flying games are rare and good flying games even rarer. It's not as if consoles have ever had as many decent flying game the PC has. But sadly flying games on all formats these day are few and far between. So I don't believe we would dismiss it unless it was no good and the truth is it isn't, it's overly simplistic, utterly shallow quick fire arcade experience.

I agree about the size of the online community, IL2 made the damage model in arcade is too forgiving, making it very hard to shoot people down quickly and not making the damage/kill timer long enough so in all modes you hardly ever get credit for a kill unless your opponent blows up. This put a lot of people off both arcade and sim players. I'm hoping after the update more people will come back and play.

Although I am happy that the gaming world feels there is a demand for WW2 air combat games, HOE is too arcadey for me (I have no PC sim exp). I honestly think that those who buy and enjoy HOE would really like BOP as it is just so much better. The gameplay in HOE is competely unrealistic.

I have HoE and will probably trade it in when Borderlands comes out. I love BoP but I also had a lot of nostalgia still for Heros over the Pacific, so I went ahead and got HoE and man was I let down. I knew it wasn't gonna be remotely sim but they really went over the top on this one. Like I said, I am a huge HOTP fan and was looking forward to the sequel. The sequel is a complete let down, most likely the product of running out of Dev money.

Not trying to bash the game, just being honest. The game doesn't have features or menus present in the original game(and only 14 campaign missions), nor the variety in the online choices(only 4 modes and 4 maps).

Went from being a must have to don't bother for me. No console editor, 2km by 2km maps with 4 v 4 p2p online, only showing off PC screen shots and footage, and worst of all no demo, they would only can a demo 3 weeks from launch if their game sucks and they know it.

Demo's sell games that's what they are for, it's only best to can the demo if you think it might do the opposite and harm sales.

I also hear the console graphics are not great and the engine regularly chugs with framerate on both 360 and PS3, probably why they only show the PC version off.

I'm going to wait till after it comes out and see what people think, as it stands for me it's gone from must have to wait and see and possibly rent if the campaign can be finished in under 10-12 hours.

Well, mainly it was to give everyone a few laughs while we waited for the game to be released. I remember when the online game Warbirds first came out sheep were the joke on the forums. It was taken so far that the developers added sheep to the landscape on a few versions. Just figured that BOP needed a mascot as well. You have to admit it did get Dennis' goat:mrgreen:

I saw this post on another forum today:

http://pc.boomtown.net/en_uk/articles/art.view.php?id=18395

The link above is an article/interview with one of the Codemaster developers for OF: Dragon Rising.

I've made this thread as a direct result of reading many various forums and seeing a lot of concerns (including my own) about the exact numbers and details for console users in Multiplayer. Allow me to summarize...

PC users will be allowed up to 32 players simultaneously playing on teams. So in an even game that gives them 16 human players per side. BUT in all multiplayer game modes, each human player will be given a squad of 4 to command (3 AI Teammates to control). So in theory, a 32 player online game translates into 32 X 4 individual units or 128 units in total (32 human and 96 AI).

Console users will be allowed up to 8 players simultaneously playing online. It's a lot smaller in comparison to PC users, but a lot more than some have believed. The original assumption here was that 4 human players on each team was the entire makeup of the total units - not true. In fact, just like on PC, console users will each be given 3 AI teammates per human player to control. In this case the equation is then 8 human players online translates into 8 X 4 individual units or a total of 32 total units playing against one another (16 versus 16 games). Unfortunately only 8 of those 32 of which, will be a human player.

Also there was another initial assumption that PC users ONLY would be granted a mission editor. The article posted (linked at top of thread) clearly states from the horses mouth (game developer) that at launch, the PC mission editor will be the only editor up, BUT console users will be getting both free DLC and paid-for DLC in the near future. THe developer says they have every intention and plan on supporting the community which has supported them for so many years in the games development process. I believe what he is stating here, is that the console version of the mission editor will have to be a free DLC in the future as Im guessing they could not get a working version for consoles before the games release date.

From the various information I have seen in this one article alone, I can reassure you guys that the console version will be every bit as detail oriented, fun, and action packed in its multiplayer aspects as the PC version. The only fundamental difference I have seen is the sheer amount of numbers you will in theory, have if the server is full. 128 unit battles would be intense no matter what game - but I think for consoles the smaller 32 unit battles won't be bad at all.

Hope this helps.

OFPDR just two weeks away, played the original OFP years back on the PC.
Can´t wait for that game to release.
Even with the flaws that are allready obvious (no mission editor console version, limited map sizes) only 4x4 + ai battles.
Still getting it, OFP + IL2 will be my main games the next coming months.
If you like realism games you can´t skip OFP!
