I used to play Airwarrior 4 Windows (Airwarrior Classic) back in 1998. I was a huge fan of that game - and I used to play with a CH Gamestick 14 gameport controller and CH Rudder pedals.

I tried this game with the Xbox 360 gamepad, and I really hated the controls. They were just bad - probably because I'm so used to stick and throttle setups.

So, I bought a Saitek Aviator stick for this game. The stick is terrible. It's got a huge deadzone, and trying to fly and line up a target seems WAY too jerky than it should be. Am I the only one with this problem?

I tried the zip-tie mod, it made the stick looser in the huge deadzone, but I still can't manage precise control. It also seems to pull to the left when left in a neutral position. If that wasn't the least of it - the stick just doesn't seem to have enough range of motion. When I push the stick left or right, the plane doesn't seem to roll fast enough.

Bad controls really ruin the game - but this saitek is so bad, I might go back to the game pad :(

What are you guys using?

SaiteK Av8r for me, but its really a bit klunky until the new update comes out. Online I either get outurned because my elevator sensitivity is dialed down, or I can turn well, but not shoot because elev. sens. is dialed up. Somewhere in the middle gets me killed on both acounts.
I need to be able to customize this damned thing or the frustration will kill this sim for me. And I am a LONG time vet of WB, AH, etc. I would love to be able to enjoy this game competitively...waiting for the update with hope.

I'd be happy if we could use these items with the Xbox 360.

X360 gamepad. I've actually gotten quite used to it. I don't know if it's even worth me buying a flightstick with all the problems they seem to have.

I'm sure that once the patch with control changes comes out, playing with the controller will be totally OK.

I don't really have much choice anyway, since my av8r is broken...

Got the Av8or, but with the same problems everyone else is having with the stick.
Rudder not working very well.(pain in the arse)
Huge Deadzone
But i wait till the update is out to see if things get better, esp. the ability to customize the controls, that should help a load allready.

im using the saitek AV8R-02

doesnt seem TO bad, but the way the controls are mapped out is ridiculous!!!

its a nightmare trying to zoom in on a target, also change view etc, im pretty pissed with this as on the front of ym IL2 box is has a nice little sticker that says "works great with saitek joystick" i think thats bullshit. The patch will sort it though so i dont mind, as it is i can live with it.

BUT

one prob that i find ABSOLUTELTY RIDICULOUS with the joystick (affects me mroe because i play capture airfield)

is the ability to stop once you have landed!!!!

You need the entire runway then some more just to be able to stop because the damn joysticks have no parking brakes for your planes, making landing pretty much a no go. A silly school boy error by the guys who created this game.

On the whole though i ant complain to much.

I tried the Aviator but after a short time I changed back to my pad. It is easier to use all the buttons. But for the future we will see. I think for this game it is needfull to have control for both hands, right hand stick with buttons for my thumb, and on the left hand powercontroll and also buttons with good placement. Like my Hotas system for PC.

Controller for now. Waiting for my Avi8or to arrive :). Hope it won't be as bad as people say though

It's not a bad stick and should be absolutely fine when the patch comes out - I'm quite happy with mine (bar the well publicised niggles about brakes and button mapping). Ok, I'm a tad miffed that it doesn't give me super-powers of aerial devastation-ability and invulnerability, but feel it would be churlish to complain

:(

In the interim period I have reverted to using the PS3 pad which works extremely well.

PS. Interesting combination of user names, would you not agree?

@ OP: you forgot to add PS3 pad in your poll...

No I didn't.

What controls do you use for Xbox 360?

I've been playing a bit more with the XBox 360 control pad, and I must say it is a LOT easier to fly with the gamepad.

The Aviator stick SUCKS.
