View Full Version : Single missions more difficult than campaign?

I originally posted this in the IL-2 forum on Xbox.com, but since there aren't that many visitors to that forum I give it a shot here as well:

Am I the only one finding the single missions to be MUCH more difficult than the campaign missions? The wingmen seems to have become less efficient:

There is one mission where you are supposed to take out remaining german ground forces . With limited ordnance you have 2 bombs and no rockets and there are 3 or 4 yellow primary targets. I tell my wingmen to attack but they fail to hit any targets EVERY time. And it doesnt seem to be possible to land and reload anywhere either...

In another mission over Berlin you are supposed to shoot down some german fighters - sound easy enough. When starting your group of wingmen are centered on the "radar" just behind you. When spotting the first targets I order them to "stay in formation" and when we get within range of the enemies I order them to attack. By then I have NO "green dots" on my "radar" anymore. Having a look at the map shows my flight scattered all over the area. And I do mean ALL OVER. My wingmen must be flying Su-33's or something because one of them always shows up at the edge of the map and must have used afterburners in order to get so far away from me in that short time... None of my wingmen are close to any targets, which means I have to deal with the germans alone. Ordering the flight to re-group doesn't work and the mission becomes an epic fail because I don't have the time to kill all targets... This happens both on Arcade and Realistic settings.

Any suggestions?

Another funny thing: I started a training mission over the Channel Area last night. I wanted to practice aerial maneuvers so I picked a Spitfire IX for me and just a single He 111 as enemy. (This is the closest to a "free roam" mode you can get in this game. Don't forget to add a good amount of time in the settings). I turned away from the target, which spawns over water, and flew in over land. All of a sudden I'm starting to hear radio messages. In russian... Im flying a british plane over England with a german opponent and Im hearing russian radio messages?!?

You know you can set time in training to unlimited?

I found that some of the missions, when set on sim and limited F/A, seem literally impossible. Like "Going home", no matter how hard I try, I can never kill "enough" Heinkels to win, which seems absurd. The only way I beat it was to ignore the bomber kill objective and just go home

Yeah, which is a good thing + the fact that AI pilots aren't very agressive since there isn't an option to fly without enemies in training... (Did that sentence even make sense? English isn't my first language...) What Im trying to say is: this "setup" makes up a pretty good flight training mission.

Yup, nothing wrong with your English. You see English people on forums who speak worse than you do

And yeah i find the single missions to be alot harder, and i also find them to be a bit more 'realistic'...i find alot of them to be tailored alot more for playing on limited F/A, for instance theres a mission on BoB where you have to patrol in a hurri, and face an overwhelming force of about 5 enemys throughout the mission....although as someone has already said, there are missions where its impossible to complet on limited F/A...

Yeah, some of 'em are alot harder. Wait'll you do the one where you've gotta make it back to your base in a Hurricane. You gotta dance in and outta the cloud deck and dodge 109's that come at you in groups of four, and I swear they turned up the damage you plane takes. They were like little specks on the screen and brrrrrrp, one little burst there goes the wing. I'm not kiddin' it's like they had sniper rifles for MGs. And that was one ARCADE for cryin' out loud!

I did this one on Simulator and I found it really easy, the 109 never found me and I came back to my squadron without any dammage... May be it was just luck

Agreed, I had no problem either

Yeah, they're harder, but they have bigger rewards. :)

2 planes per campaign?

Well if it's one of your favorite planes then I guess it's worth it.

Multiplayer really gets you the best unlocks, but actually finding a game is harder than any of the single missions.

I dunno, they just seem to be "pick me ups" in a way? I think Single Mission and Campaign give you the best planes, though I'm still working at getting my Il-4!!! in multiplayer.

well I guess it's down to your opinion. Personally I think single player gets the base planes, but to max out, you need to play MP, I mean getting the more advanced versions of planes, and getting custom weapons.

Right now I'm working through the Korsun Pocket single missions to get the po-2 and it's giving me a bit of trouble!

Yeah things like different weapon loadouts come with online I think more than SP.

didn't have a problem getting the hurricane back to manston, just stayed in the clouds, struggliing like hell though with the mission where you are providing cover for a gaggle of IL2's, 1 109 comes through and they scatter, you can't cover 12 planes that are flying in 12 different directions.

Maybe I just had bad luck is all. I finally figured out sort of a pattern where the enemies were and just planned my flight path accordingly.

Your right, most weapon loadouts get unlocked by online play (which I do, not lately though :() but all I see the loadouts as, are 500lb bombs etc. for the fighters. I just keep the fighters how they are, no need to add drag, because I think that the bombs and rockets actually do add drag to the fighters and other planes? I think it said it in the game actually?
