Well, the subject pretty much captures it. What have you been adjusting your sensitivity settings to, getting the best results with the AV8R? Preferably for sim.

It's got a bit of a deadzone, but hey, what can you do. It's the stick I have, and I'll just have to suck it up. Can't imagine whining to my superior officer, "I don't wanna fly, my plane's stick has a deadzone, and I'm just gonna troll forums until someone invents something better." You'd get court marshaled for that nonsense.

That zip tie mod will help a great deal with the dead zone, as does weakening the rudder spring (well, for me anyway :) ). I've left my ailerons about 5 clicks down, and the elevator at 1/2 sensitivity. I'd only done arcade as the other modes were to hard with the dead zone / over control / my wrist giving out. Just modded the stick last night so will give Realistic a go this evening!

Pilots were allowed to give their planes little tweaks I hope? Don't want to end up in the brig ;)

Yeah, I did the ziptie mod. How did you weaken the rudder spring? You really knocked the elevator to half? Wow.

I imagine tweaks were ok. Bringing your own stick might have been a bit much.

ziptie the springs under your av8r together. There's a bunch of pics on the forums. Takes a TON of pressure off the stick. I have no idea how he tuned down the rudder spring though.

The reason for this thread is that I feel like when I'm trying to dial in, I'm up and down and up and down and all over the damned place. Granted, this is a new game, but I thought some of you would have suggestions on settings. And so you have. Good call, me.

The other controls on mine worked OK for me, but elevator (could be a personal problem! ;) ) is way to sensitive. I line up horizontally on targets fine, but unless I dial the elevator way back I alternate between too high then too low. Its due in part to the dead zone I think, as it causes a slight delay in my input on the stick to when the plane responds, then I overdo it as it doesn't happen quick enough.

Inside the stick there is another spring that provides the rotating resistance (it goes over the analog pot for the rudder). I took that out, held the gap open (makes sense when you see it) to where it would just lightly apply pressure when the stick was centered, then heated it with a torch to 'set' it to no tension there. Reinstall (after a dip in water to cool) and reassemble. My stick now takes may 1/4 the effort to rotate, makes the rudder input a lot smoother, and more importantly to me is a lot easier on my wrist.

Sounds trickier then it is, took less then a half hour to do.

I'm messing around with the AVR-02's sensitivity myself, and it's a difficult balance. I've been tying the ailerons and elevators together, but maybe that should change.

What I've found:

Anything above halfway, and it feels like I can't maintain level flight or trim the plane.

Anything below halfway, it's very easy (too easy) to not stall, and the plane feels docile all around.

Thus far, I've been willing to compromise some control for the ability to make minute adjustments, so I recommend trying low sensitivity and then working up to something higher.

Keep the settings coming, as I'll definitely try them out.

This link has a GREAT picture. You can see that the guy wrapped his stick in tennis tape, and then ziptied 2 sections of the spring on opposite sides. I did this as well and it helped a TON. I haven't wrapped the stick yet, though. The ziptie took out about 60% of the resistance. Basically, the stick is factory made to be a little too strong.

I did some more research and saw guys taking down the sensitivity about 11 clicks. Seems like a lot of people, as they move up in difficulty, start to really ratchet down on the settings

I've been flying in sim and realistic and don't like to knock down the sensitivity more then a 4 or 5 notches. You really do lose a lot of control range if you go down very far. Even at 4 or 5 steps down I can end up with the stick all the way back and still not stall.

Question: Lets assume for this question that I am in a one on one dogfight with someone who has the exact same plane and flight stick (AV8R-02). If they have their settings on full and I have my settings dialed down lets say 4-6 notches does the player with full settings have a tactical advantage over me?

yes as long as he can controll his aircraft!

i usually put the sensitivity on both down a good 5-6 depending on the aircraft.

i have done the zip tie mod and it helps quite a lot.
