I finally was able to join a multiplayer match today, I have been trying since Thursday
This game is amazing, but it has some serious multiplayer issues
1.) sometimes I spontaneously explode whenever I spawn
2.) Planes disappear and reappear while I am targeting them
3.) I keep hearing the little "hit" sound, as I spray a target with bullets, yet they don't die (one guy was spewing smoke as I got three "hit" sounds in a row, still didn't die!)
4.) People crash into the ground after being shot, and I don't get credit for the kill
5.)I found all this out today because I was finally was able to join a multiplayer match... I have been trying since Thursday!
Please please please hear our collective cries for an outstanding online experience. I want this game to succeed so bad!
This is coming from a guy who has been waiting for this game about two years, told everyone he knows about it, bought an ACE EDGE just to be able to truly get the full experience and I can tell you I am pretty put off by these major issues.
If I am dissuaded from online matches, imagine the average joe gamer renting this game to give it a try
anyone else having these issues or is it just me?

Its a great game but the online play is not very good. All of the above issues when i manage to finds a game. One thing that does hack me off is the having to re-invite your friends every time or is there a way to avoid this?
I am very close to taking it in to Blockbuster and seeing what credit i can get towards Modern Warfare 2

cant say i had 1 or 2...3 i have plenty...but sounds that you the same as me and are just a rotten shot, sorry. a plane dosnt crash just cos it gets a few hits...you need to hit the right place with all the bits of lead going in the same concentrated area, spraying is no good...then you might kill him.
the rest, yep thems are issues

Planes disappearing and reappearing is called lag, welcome to console gaming.
The game wasn't released on Thursday. Why do people always assume MP servers should be up before the game is even supposed to be released?
moozicmon

people have been playing on MP since Thursday. I am aware of lag in console gaming, but I have never seen it this bad, maybe it is due to the nature of the game...

In roughly 100 games, I have seen plenty of people crashing at the beginning of the match because it spawns them all close together, but I have never encountered lag. All of the people I have been playing with have said the same thing, crashing yes, lag no. The major issue is the no-penalty crash system. People are exploiting that to no end.

1) Never heard of this. Will check.
2) Just lag. Nothing van be done from our side. Try to select games from nearby places (with smalle ping) or host session
3) If you simply hit someone, doesn't mean that they die immediately. Considering that you have prooved lag, probably not all of your bullets really find a target.
4) That will be addressed in a neares update. Although it is more complicated that it seems to be, but it will be addressed somehow. Details soon.
5) It is called NAT configuration, I assume. Network configurations can be very sophisticated, and not all of the sessions can be joined. Try to select another game. Or there are simply no MP games available.

Hi guys, first post and all but I think the games great. Really looking forward to some DLC planes....maybe a Tempest? :D
I do think the online play does need a tweek if it's possible. I agree with the quote below, it would certainly make online play that much better.
One thing that does hack me off is the having to re-invite your friends every time or is there a way to avoid this?
I think the COD4/5 online system is brilliant and a version of that would work brilliantly on IL2.
Once again, great game and I look forward to your solutions.

I really hope you can sort out something with the crashing on purpose. I understand some people crash and it can't be avoided. If you crash because your plane is damaged, you flew too low and clipped something or you stalled at low altitude, I can handle that. When people head straight towards the ground in an attempt to avoid the other person/team gaining a point, then thats blatant cheating. Its happened a few times to me :(
The other thing that annoys me with crashing, shoot a few rounds in the enemy and then crash head on. You shouldn't get any points for suiciding! Some mid-air collisions cant be helped, fine - but to crash into another plane in the desperate hope you get the point, its dumb.
I've not actually had any deliberate crashes happen to me yet while playing online, although I haven't played all that many matches. One thing I did notice is that I stacked my plane a couple of times during dogfights because I was using the tracking camera and lost my bearings at low level. Thats not a problem with the game obviously (just bad flying on my part) but it might explain some of the crashing.
As for mid-air crashes.... I can really see that being a problem in strike games. I remember on IL-2 on the PC getting rammed by idiots while flying a bomber...
I've noticed that a lot of people have been asking how to unlock the B17, or to have a Lanc as DLC... thats all well and good, but wait till you've been Kamikaze'd a few times while on a bomb run!!

"I keep hearing the little "hit" sound, as I spray a target with bullets, yet they don't die (one guy was spewing smoke as I got three "hit" sounds in a row, still didn't die!)"
This actually speaks well of the game and the damage model, IMO. The planes should be able to get shot up, exploding should be a function of where they get shot and what the plane is.
Haven't seen explosions at respawn, but we have seen people at the start of the round seem to either spawn too close causing it, or they spawn so close that when one moves out of "formation" they collide.
As for MP rooms, I think that will pick up as more people finish the game and have a good number of planes unlocked. Many people don't even know the game came out early. It will pick up. If you have a good connection (upload speed in particular) just host a room. People pop in with my friends and I very quickly. We see no lag at all, unlike almost every other game out there at launch.

The main issue that people are having with the multiplayer is the damage model on Arcade. I'm talking about the 360 mainstream gamers here, not the flight sim fans etc. If you check out the forums around the net there's a growing number of people spreading the word that it takes ages to bring a plane down in Arcade and that you get nothing in the way of score if somebody else finishes off your target after you've done all the hard work.
People are quitting because of this. They spend a lot of time hammering plane after plane and score nothing. I was talking to two players today who both pointed out they felt the game had wasted their time online.
People are also passing on the game after rental because of this. The 360 is a console and the gamer demographic is radically different to that of pc gamers. Most gamers on the 360 want a fast action air combat game that looks pretty and has a much more immediate multiplayer than the game currently offers. They are not interested in Realistic or Simulation modes.
The picture being painted on this forum is a bit skewed because it's full of hardened flight simmers. The world at large has a far simpler issue with the online multi and it can be patched easily if the game is to attract a bigger player base.

They are not interested in Realistic or Simulation modes.
After talking to a few friends with this game, they never even knew there was a realistic or sim mode because like a lot of gamers they never bothered with the tutorials and went straight into the campaign.
Added to that I've noticed in MP on realistic mode that most people don't know to lower elevator sensitivity and constantly spin and crash, then quit.
I have to admit that after my first couple of games online I did not like this game. I've played flight sims since the early 1980's and was not to bad on IL2 online either but after shooting someone loads of times with an aircraft armed with cannon and not getting kills I was like 'what the hell is wrong with this game'. You can't use boom and zoom tactics because you can't destroy an aircraft like that. I've played a game of dogfight where there was a train of 6 of us all following and shooting at the person in front for ages and no one got a credited kill, most people quit.
I do fear for the long term life of this game online. There are hardly any servers now, in a couple of week there will probably only be a few diehards that still play this.

I have experienced the 'explode just after respawn' bug once. I think there are enough reports of this in the wild for it to be a high priority fix.
I'll also add my voice to the clamor for someone getting a kill credit on a plane that deliberately crashes. It's probably all but impossible to determine if a crash is really deliberate or not, but I think the game should err on the side of trying to assign a kill for any crash. If a plane is at all damaged, whoever got the last hit should get the kill credit.
I think it would be nice to also give assist credits. This would go to whoever dealt the most damage to a downed plane but didn't deliver the final killing blow. This would especially appease the arcade crowd.
I think the comments about how the arcade/casual crowd finds it much harder to get a kill in MP is totally understandable. All you have to do is compare the accuracy and persistence needed between arcade campaign and arcade multiplayer to see a world of difference. In the campaign, all you need to do is shoot in the vague direction of a bogey to see them go down in flames. Playing multiplayer, it takes some concentrated fire to score a kill.
The campaign should teach players all they need to know about the rules of combat to be able to play against other humans in multiplayer. The differences in the damage modelling and weapon accuracy/assistance breaks this implicit rule, which is in turn making arcade players scratch their head and walk away from the game.
If the arcade campaign is nothing but one hit kills then the same should be true in arcade multiplayer. This should be the default. If necessary (and something I think should be kept) there could be an option to have the current arcade mp damage modelling.

Anton,
Thanks for responding, I can't tell you how much it is appreciated.
I hope it is understood that I am speaking from the perspective of your average gamer. While realistic and simulation mode are pretty much spot on, Arcade mode is just a little too frustrating for your average "pick up and go" gamer. The future of this game, and any other sim-esque games depends on a strong MP community. Once you have lost people, it is very hard to get them back.
I am sure you and your team are doing everything to make the MP experience the best it can be, but it is crucial to get any changes implemented ASAP in order to build a strong online community.
Best of luck!

My two cents. I'm not good at flight simulators, and don't know much about individual planes, however, saying that, the arcade difficulty online is perfect for someone like me.
I think the planes 'health' (such a newb i know) in online is perfect, makes playing online a really fun, enjoyable, intense and visceral experience. I love the fact that you can have battles with one person that can last the entire game. I can't see how people can complain about how hard it is to kill someone online, because it's all about positioning. If you're miles away shooting someone, then you're not gonna get very far.
I've had the game for what, two days, and i'm finding online on arcade difficulty perfect, and pretty balanced too. I do agree that there should be some way of tracking people who just crash in the ground to avoid letting someone get a kill. However, i think the damage model is fine, especially for mainstream gamers, as i'm one of them! It's just a matter of playing for a little bit, learning how to turn quicker than your opponent, and figuring out how the reticule system works. I cant tell you how opposed i'd be to changing the damage model in online mode.
The thing that makes this game different and more fun to the rest of them is that i dont rack up 20 kills to 10 deaths, its that i barely get more than 3-5 kills every game. This makes it more intense and personal, and means you dont constantly get pissed off with dying. People are only complaining because they're not very good at the moment, not to mention people choosing rediculously lousy brick planes in online mode.
In summary, the damage model for online is perfect. It just requires a little bit of skill to figure out how to do the most damage. This is coming from one of the most mainstream 360 gamers out there.

Its maybe the relative disparity between SP and MP play?
In SP arcade you fly a virtual tank able to shrug off most attacks where as the enemy planes seem to be made of paper and explode at the slightest hit (reminds me of the Simpsons where Homers making Mr Burns breakfast and the cereal sets on fire) where as online in arcade everyone has a flying bullet sponge so what SP experience tells you should be a definite kill suddenly isn't.

I understand what you're saying, but at the same time, what games have you ever played where its the same difficulty online as offline? If it was as easy as single player, it would be the worst online experience ever, there would be planes blowing up in every direction, and you'd have kids shouting 'OWNED' every minute. If anything, it should be harder to blow up a plane in single player. Anyway, regardless, I dont think that a single player experience should define the rules of online play.

I do like this game and have finished the campaign and all the single missions but i really bought it for online and it blows.
I've never had a game that was so hard to find a match, there are never any realistic or simulator servers only the occasional arcade match with 3 or 4 players and arcade sucks.
This game is never going to have a decent community if no one is even playing it in the week that it shipped. It pains me to say it but tomorrow I'm going to trade it in. I so wanted this to be a great online game but sadly it was not meant to be.

Thats a shame, because I think there are many people (such as myself) who still havent got their copy yet. Plus i think many will play through the single player missions before doing much online. I think you need a bit more patience, you're giving in a bit early if you are ready to give up on it when it hasnt even been out a week yet.

The whol crashing on purpose to avoid giving the other team a point after you have been wounded works half of the time...iv noticed when you shoot someone with in a span of 5-10 secs before they crash the person shooting gets the kill, any longer and it just says "crashed"

Yeah, there are a lot of people who love the game but don't have much time in MP yet. SP has a LOT to offer, and when you unlock planes and loadouts to be used in MP, people want a good stock before spending the majority of their time online.

I've never had a game where no one played it during the first week. I understand there is a lot of SP content, but I don't believe people are not going to have an MP game until they have completed it all.
This game is DOA. 90% of owners will only play arcade anyway, most quit in disgust when they realised they needed to do ten times more damage to an enemy plane than in SP mode to have any chance of scoring a kill, and then most likely they would be cheated out of a score by a crash or bail out. Most of them tried a couple of MP games and never came back.
I've had 1 simulator match with 3 players, 1 realistic dogfight with 8 players, 5 of whom quit during the game after spining into the ground for the umpteenth time and a few arcade games with a half a dozen players. All in 5 days.
I've never come across a game with such a poor amount of players online in launch week. I'm going to trade in this against a copy of Beatles Rockband that is coming out Friday, I would recommend IL2 to anybody, but not for MP it was DOA.

Yossarian it may have debut in the top ten but I'm guessing that quite a few of those sales were pre-orders that were dispatched last week and which have got lost in the postal system.
It is quiet on the multiplayer front but it's too soon to dismiss this. On Friday I couldn't get a Game on-line for love or money but I did notice an improvement on Monday. Give it another week and I'm sure it will pick up as more people recieve their orders as muggins said.

Why would I care if the game is on sale in the US, I play UK afternoon/ evening time not in the middle of the night when the US is on line. It makes no difference to us if you can't get the game yet because DUH we live in different time zones and play at different times. The game is in the top 10 in the UK, I play UK time, I don't care what goes on the US because it does not effect me.
Lots of people must have bought in the UK to make the top ten, I play UK time and normally with mostly UK gamers.
@TRK29, erm Canada has the same time zones as the US, I'm in bed before they get online of an evening. 8pm US east coast is 2am here and 8pm US west coast is 5am here, I was never going to play with them anyway.

Yeah, clearly nobody except Brits are playing during the time you play.
That was a stupid post, the game debuts in the UK top 10 and you're trying to tell me not a lot of people have the game yet. Think about it.
I'm pretty sure my purchase goes towards getting it into the top 10, yet I still haven't got my copy, nor has anyone that I know of that ordered from the same site as I did, however I do think it is more of a case of people not playing MP so much while there is SP to play through.
I've been a big fan of the cod series (on pc), but I have always tended to play through the single player before I did much mp at all, which was usually the first week after buying. Add to that, there are multiplayer issues which are pissing people off, which Anton has already replied about in this thread to say they are looking into this as well as possible joystick fixes mentioned in another thread.
Up to you at the end of the day, but the game probably will have less of a chance to get a following online if people give up on it so early on :(

i wouldnt worry about the arcade crowd liking it too much, those arent the gamers that will stay with the game anyway, those are the ADD little kids that cant pay attention to something for more than 5 minuites and need all sorts of power ups and noises saying how good they are.
while arcade may be good for first learning i guess and getting familiar with the game unless its a problem with realistic or sim who cares
HAHA why are you genius's even responding to people like yossarian, you dont have to worry about them cuz theyl either be in arcade or hitting the ground in a fireball after being shot down

Brilliant Post!! Although I do understand peoples plight in arcade, taking too long to get a kill, think of it this way. If you were a casual gamer, and not very good (yet) at IL-2 would you enjoy being shot down so easily in an arcade match? If the damage model was adjusted in arcade, then the new people would get owned all the time QUICKLY and leave even quicker...... For those of you complaining about arcade, fly realistic or Sim mode... You seem to be good enough at flying to stay behind the person, and in realistic, one or two good cannon burst is all you need to cripple or kill an enemy plane.
Think of arcade as IL-2 with training wheels, all great to learn how to fly, but you sure as hell dont want to let your friends see you with them on.......
Friends, dont let friends fly arcade........

Does anyone else have a problem with lag. I haven't got the greatest of connections (10mb but not much upload) so I don't usually don't host games. When I'm in someone elses lobby I have the slightest of lag and it makes it imposible to hit anything unless im flying right straight behind someone or going head to head. Ive tested it on arcade I aim at the deflection marker and fire and nothing happens, the plane goes merrily on because the guy isn't actually there anymore. On capture the airstrip I fire loads of rockets at people slowly landing to no effect, then when they stop their plane suddenly jumps into a different position??? Its quite anoying. Also I never know when I'm being hit, I get no sound. I think this game is really sensitive to any amount of lag even the smallest amount.

Not getting any lag, but if you're connecting to rooms hosted in the US, for instance, you'll get lag due to the distances involved.

Cross ocean lag is a fickle beast. Example, I was playing earlier with the robotic pope, and kept getting dumped. Total game meltdown, party would end, trying to leave session and then eventual consol restart. (sorry bout that pope). I was the host.
I was also playing with Yossarian and his mate today, no problems what so ever. (unless some-one would leave the game, then very short lag then back to normal.)
I think it has more to do if the connections like each other, some people I just cant connect with... House MD for one.

Come to think of it, one player in our party couldn't join a room I was hosting for some reason. Got in the first time and promptly dropped at launch, then couldn't get in at all. Switched hosts and it was fine. I know my NAT is open, and pretty sure he said his was as well. No comm issues.
Sometimes the route for connecting just screws things up IMO.

Aye no lag at all on a transatlanic game, and loads of fun.
I've just played a few games of Strike with 10 mixed UK & US players with no lag. If anybody have not tried this mode yet I can recommend it. Half the team go bombers, the other half fighters, it was really good fun. The leaderboards say only 18 people have ever played it, and it is more fun than dogfighting even because you get dogfights and bombing and bomber intercepts all in one game, there was a good mix of aircraft aswell, stuka's, Il2M's, all the fighters and level bombers, seriously try it.

Well its not lag like you sometimes see jumping around, Everything looks fine and when I fire I see the hits but the plane is undamaged. I don't know what it is ment to be like in multi player on realistic and pro but someone said a few cannon shots is enough??? lol not for me, I follow close behind someone who is moving around alot and watch the rounds hit for minutes and nothing. Only if they are in level flight can I do any damage. I'm pretty sure its not just me having shit aim because I had no problem on sim in the demo (not started the campaign yet)
Oh well, at least I can hit ground targets in strike.

I jumped into MP yesterday and can only stress that the mentioned issues are fixed asap!
Please add a lobby system and don´t kick me out when the session is finished!
Had problems finding games yesterday, most people on ps3 seem to be playing arcade, a few realistic, and i opened a room for about half an hour on sim till finally someone entered.
I hope more people play sim online, realistic is too arcady for my taste!
And PLEASE remove the virtuall cockpit on sim mode.
Cockpit only!!!
Had no problems with lag, but i never played with more then 4-5 people in a room.

Haven't run into the Goat yet, but I have run into Yossarian. Being in the top 20 right now doesn't mean a lot considering that there's only about 50 people on the list. There were realistic games going on all night and as I recall, you played 2 or 3 games, kept getting shot down by bombers and left, so the games are out there, you just have to play them. Wait until they sort out the actual release date for everyone that didn't take part in the Gamestop gold rush, when we actually have thousands of people playing, then we can discuss the top 20.

Lag in consoles games depends greatly on the connection you have with the person that is hosting the game and with the other players.
Unless you play IL2 and other games with exactly the same people, its not a completely conclusive observation.

I notice quite a few posts in reference to the Arcade damage model. Let me clarify my concern.
If BoP were to be released with no real competition, then this would not be an issue. That is not the case. HOE will soon hit the market with a rush of aggressive advertising, flashy colors, and impossible physics.
And the casual gaming community will eat it up.
Why? It's fun. Arcade mode should be fun. Arcade mode is NOT fun in BoP. If I can whiz about the skies at 900km, take a turn at dead throttle and not stall, have unlimited ammo, fuel AND defeat a freakin’ spitfire with an I-153, why does it take an obscene amount of damage to get a kill? I can’t count how many times I was in a dogfight for the duration of the game session, getting hit after hit (for crying out loud he’s been blowing black smoke for the last five strafes!) yet NO KILL. NOW I head over to SP and I’m almost a KM away killing a BOMBER with one good strafe. WTF? !? HOE will be able to offer immediate gratification, no matter how unrealistic it may be. If it is fun that is what people will continue to play I’m afraid, leaving the BoP MP community in dwindling numbers. I understand Realistic and Simulation mode needing to up the ante as far as the damage model goes, but that is for a different demographic. Think of how many gamers would actually be playing CoD if the only difficulty was Veteran or Hardcore? I am really concerned about the longevity of this game in the online world.

No not me, I've yet to quit a single game.
What game mode ? and when ?
Last night was the first time I had ever played in a game mode against bombers, I played 3 game and twice I was in a bomber. The first game I was shot down AFTER I had dropped my bombs a few times, the second game I was not shot down once and the third game I swapped to a fighter to defend our bases and was in a 109G6 and got 14 kills. In none of those games or any other that I have played have I quit once. Stop BS-ing.

Most console games do not support join in progress. It's nothing new. I used to play a lot of Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six, they don't allow join in progress, yet the available server list was always full. I also play a lot of Battlestations, people bitch about there being hardly any servers for that but there are always at least half a dozen in the list and that game never made the top 20 charts even. I've only got 2 games that do allow join in progress, COD and Forza 2, and in forza you can't actually join the race just the server and wait for the next race

I think I played against you yesterday in Browntrout's server. Did you get lag in that game ? 'cos it was fine for me and I'm in the UK and Browntrout is in

I agree about the ping bars though. Anton even told us to pick servers with a low ping to avoid latency, but how are we meant to tell what our connection is like with out them.
And yes I've noticed in arcade mode anyway that the host has a big advantage, it's nowhere near as bad in realistic though because of the reduced damage model.

Anton,
1 point is true. Experienced this one on several occasions. Probably due to the fact that you respawn on or close to another unfortunate armchair pilot.

I was wondering about this. At the moment, I don't even get to choose which server to use. It just throws me into a room (If I'm lucky enough to find one.) I have taken to creating my own sessions to bypass this, but I would much rather join a full room then have a three person dogfight :(

Yup, It has happened to me on a number of occasions, including my first ever death and respawn playing multiplayer. In dogfight It seems like Everybody is using the same spawn point, aswell as the spawn deaths it causes games turning into 1 furball around the spawn point of a giant unused map. The game really needs more random spawn points covering the whole map.
