Not being able to join a game in progress will kill the MP scene like it has for every other game that doesn't have that feature.

I can't say much about the online... but it will not kill my MP gaming if there is no joining during a match.... but hey how about you give examples of games that are dead because of a lack of said feature?
I can't think of one off the top of my head, maybe you could enlighten me as to which games died soley due to no in game joining?
*not trying to be an ass.... but seriously... I can't think of one.*

I can't attest for games failing because of this. But I can tell you that if a team is losing and the whole team drops it can be really annoying for a match to turn into 8 vs 2. So I think it would be a really cool thing if they did make it possible to join matches. I doubt we'll see that in this game's life. But if it sells well enough then maybe in a sequel?

They should allow it at least in non-ranked games.
In 1946 server was changing the map every hour, we just had to select our homebase and we were set !
I think a lot of people don't care about ranking, after 18 we don't have time enough to have as many kills as adolescents who play more than 10 hours a day ^^
Open games is what makes that 1946 servers are still full 3 years after it came out.
If BoP doesn't change, I doubt people will keep interest.
I myself quit the game after two or three unsuccessful attempts to join a game.

I have yet to try online in BOP... maybe you justhad bad luck with who was hosting...
its like forza 2... you can't join a race once its started... the game didn't die because of this... but it does force you to team up with people that aren't juvinial and run if they can't win! ( reminds me of kids back in gradeschool crying and leaving with thier ball cause they sucked and got picked last )
I have a sweet connection, so once I get my flightstick you can bet on me hosting matches online... heck id host right now... if i could fly with the wonky controller layout that can't be changed!
don't quit the game just yet! you need to remember a lot of people haven't even got the game yet... I hear some places in Europe won't sell the game till the 15th!!! Also, not many know that someone has to actually host a server.... ( no dedicated servers, someone has to host. ) not just join a game.

The first one that comes to mind is Operation Flashpoint on the PC and Battlestations Midway on consoles. I promise you, a smaller audience + no lobby + no joining of a game in progress = few to no online matches and a very limited lifespan.
There are maybe 30-50 people even attempting to play online at peak hours with a game this small. Since war games appeal to a more international audience that play at different hours that number may be even smaller. Unless everyone is friends and agrees to play at a certain time it will be very difficult to get some full games going.
You can't compare the audience of Forza 2 to this game. Forza 2 will sell 1000x the copies and of course it would make no sense to join a race after it has already started.

But you can join an open lobby in forza2 during the race, you just have to wait or watch until the next race. I don't have BoP yet but I believe you can't get into a room at all unless the game hasn't started, which gives people very little time to search and get in the lobby. If it is like Ace combat 6then that game disapeares from the list while the game is going so someone seaching will think nobody is hosting.
