Hey guys just got done playing the demo and was frustrated with some of the controls. My question is will there be an option to configure all the controls to ones liking? Having to hold down the right stick to look around just feels plain awkward and at times I would change my throttle not meaning to. This may be odd to some but I actually play the pc game with a 360 controller using xpadder and here is what I found to work the best for me.

Left stick- control surfaces
right stick- free look
triggers- rudder
bumpers- throttle
A- guns
B- bombs
X- rockets
click left stick to zoom
Y- flaps
back button- map
Anything else I missed could be mapped to the d-pad

The most important to me is having the right stick free look without having to click down on it and I like having the triggers as rudders because using the right stick for rudders just feels plain awkward. Also when playing multiplayer on sim mode I could see situational awareness being a problem when constantly having to click down on the right stick.

What would be really cool is if the xbox live vision camera could be used for trackir.

Without the ability to map the controls to ones liking might make me think twice about this title.

Does anyone else feel the same way about the controls?

There's already been a few threads about this and word from anton is that this is the only config.

The current set up doesnt bother me but I still dont understand why they didnt put in a controller config menu

I just bought a stick.

Just get an Aviator stick. It makes flying much easier and more realistic. The only downside is not being able to easily access the zoom target button unless you do the stick mod. If you are going to play on Sim you won't have that feature anyway.

If you could use the xbox camera as a TrackIR I would literally dance around my home doing cart wheels. I love my PC trackIR. A boy can dream can't he?

Hopefully Natal really does launch next year, and I hope stuff like head tracking gets patched into a lot of games.

Especially this and Forza 3. :D

the aviator is fine- until you want to land on a reasonably short runway...

Anyone know if this is being sorted? The general jist was flightstick were supported (albeit only 97% :( )

I feel exactly as frustrated with the free look as you do. The control scheme you listed above is almost exactly what I use on Over G Fighters. d-pad for landing gear, triggers for rudders, bumpers for throttle, etc. The ability to look around freely with out the hassle of having to hold down a buttle is crucial in a dogfight. If real pilots can just turn their heads, why should we have to hold down a button to look around? Even Battlefield 1943, they made the mistake of having to hold down the LB in order to look around, and when looking around you lost control of the aircraft......ridiculous.

I do hope they add customizations to the control schemes....not just normal, south paw etc.......I mean give us the choice to choose which button does what just like a PC game profiler.

You know RTEK it also makes it very hard to taxi because you cant look around and use your rudders at the same time which I could see resulting in many collisions and frustrated gamers. It also doesn't give you the ability to use rudders while freelooking in a dogfight. And most importantly you cant adjust throttle while freelooking in a dogfight.

I really hope that we can change the controls to our liking in the final build or atleast have presets that will match everyones liking. Hopefully the devs will see that many people have problems with the controls in the demo or maybe it is just a demo thing and they will have fully customizable controls in the final game.

I really enjoy playing il2 for pc and have been looking forward to this version for some time.

That's one thing I liked about Over G. The ability to taxi to the runway was something that all other flying games on console just don't provide. I doubt this game will provide us with that option prior to a mission, but it would be cool.

I gotta have the rudders on the triggers. I don't understand why this game would have a simulation mode, but make right trigger for guns.....this isn't a shooter. Why do developers insist on trying to make flying games so much like FPS? And then there's the throttle being on the right stick? That's just stupid.

These devs, I applaud them for some amazing work, but they need to go play some Over G and see how better controls are implemented in a console flight simulator.

I too play over g and think its an amazing sim for console but I think the devs should have took an xbox controller plugged it into there pc and said how can I use this to play il2 effectively. I use xpadder and play il2 for pc all the time and have gotten quite good at it. I compete with all the guys using there fancy joysticks and trackir. Don't get me wrong if I had the extra bucks I go out and buy those goodies but since I travel quite a bit and play on a laptop I make do with my xbox controller.

Im really hoping that the dogfight mode is similar to the pc game where you select your airstrip, plane, loadout and then have the ability to taxi and join up with friends before taking off. Also hoping for objectives in the dogfight mode where you can have one group strictly for air support and one for ground targets.

There is something about taking off, making it to and completing an objective, and then landing back at base. Gives you even more sense of accomplishment if you have made it back and landed after taking damage.

I have a sweet PC with Il2 1946 and a load of mods installed, but unfortunately I didn't bring it to Uni so I'm stuck with a 512mb RAM laptop with no graphics card. It will run the original Il2 with maxed out settings though, and I'm playing that with a 360 controller.

It is actually really easy to play, and once I fiddled around with the layout I settled down with left stick controlling pitch and roll, camera on the D-pad, rudders on the triggers and the fire buttons on the bumpers. Flaps and throttle are also on the buttons. The other functions are split between the keyboard and the rest of the buttons on the controller, and I can fight using just the controller. Landing and trimming need the keyboard, because there aren't enough buttons to go around.

The gamepad won't replace my HOTAS setup once I get my real computer back, but it is certainly usable.
