Hi all,

This thread is inspired by the image of a Battle of Britain pilot taken shortly after returning from a mission. His face shows extreme fatigue.

I've posted this in another thread, but I think it is worth repeating. (He was killed a few months later).

Please add any similar images. Allied or Axis. Friend or Foe.

Pilot Officers JRB Meaker and PR Burton of 249 Squadron, both killed within hours of each other on the 27th September 1940.

Burton was killed first, after chasing and firing at a Bf110 above the roof tops of Hailsham but he ran out of ammo.

In a last ditch attempt to bring the hun invader down he rammed the nazi plane, bringing it down in a field just outside of Hailsham, but was unfortunately killed in the process of doing so.

The pilot of the Bf110 was Hptm Horst Liensberger of Stab V(Z) LG1.

Meaker died a few hours later that same day,he as firing at a formation of Ju88's when his aircraft was hit by the cross fire from the enemy bombers,East of London, near Dallington.

He bailed out of his stricken aircraft but was hit by the tailplane as he did so,and fell to his death, his parachute unopened.

(You may have noticed my using of Plt Off JRB Meaker on my avatar, this is just a small personal tribute to our RAF pilots of this time that sacrificed so much for this country's liberty.)

The airman is John Lonsdale of 3 squadron and the picture was taken at Summer camp Warmwell 1939. Too much scrumpy was the cause.

Oberfeldwebel Artur Dau, the fighter pilot of ME 109E-4 Werke / Nr. 1523 Coded: White 14 + of 7 Staffel / Jagdgeschwader 5. He was shot down by Sqn/Ldr Peter Townsend, C/O of 85 Squadron RAF, and parachuted at Garden Wood, Poulton Farm, South Alkham, 5 miles NE of Folkestone, Kent, England, at 16.55 on August 28, 1940.

Artur Dau, recalled at the time:-

"I shall certainly remember 28 August 1940 if I should ever live to be a 100!

That day, my Staffel was on a Freie Jagd (Free Hunt) over the Channel and southern England. Suddenly, I had two Hurricanes in my sights and, with my Rottenflieger (Wingman), attacked them.

I had opened fire on the second aircraft when I was hit and had to bale out over Dover. After landing, I was taken into custody by Coastguards and then a Policeman arrived and took note of my details.

Then I was taken to Folkestone and locked up in a cell. Shortly after, an RAF officer (probably Sqn/Ldr Don Finlay C/O 54 Squadron) with a bandaged head appeared in my cell. We shook hands and he asked me if I had been the pilot of a ME 109 that had crashed near Folkestone. I said that I was and he pointed to his head and said, "You did that!" I answered him "I am sorry"; then he left.

Some hours later, I was driven to London and interrogated. That was the end of me being a pilot."
